Tourism, Major Events and Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said the event would bring thousands of visitors to the Gold Coast and generate more than $10 million for the Queensland economy.
“This is the first time Australia has ever hosted the world's largest badminton event in the tournament's 25-year history,” Ms Jones said.
“It offers us an opportunity to showcase the Gold Coast as a leisure and major events destination to a global television audience of more than half a billion people.
“It will also preview one of our new Commonwealth Games venues, the Carrara Sport and Leisure Centre.
“The Sudirman Cup represents a major tourism coup for Queensland with strong interest in badminton in Asia and Europe.”
Ms Jones said the Badminton World Federation Annual General Meeting would be held alongside the Sudirman Cup attracting delegates from more than 150 countries.
Badminton Australia Chief Executive Paul Brettell said Badminton Australia was looking forward to hosting the World Team Badminton Championships.
“Badminton Australia is delighted that we have been charged with the responsibility by the BWF to host this prestigious Event,” he said.
“The Gold Coast is a superb environment and our partnership with the Queensland Government will ensure an event of the highest standard.”
The 2017 BWF Sudirman Cup will be held on the Gold Coast from 21-28 May 2017.
