SKI & SNOWBOARD KOREA AT THE UPCOMING SYDNEY & MELBOURNE SNOW EXPOS

For Australian skiers who are perhaps thinking right now of where to ski during the northern hemisphere winter, come along to the upcoming Sydney and Melbourne Snow Expos and learn more about what Korea has to offer.

Korea Tourism Organization in association with Gangwon Province and Yongpyong Resort will be promoting the region and its excellent ski resorts and attractions at the Sydney and Melbourne Snow Expos this month.

The Sydney Snow Expo will be held on Sunday, 17 May from 9-4pm at White Bay Cruise Terminal, Balmain and the Melbourne Snow Expo will take place on Sunday, 24 May from 10-4pm at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, Southbank.

There is greater international interest in Korea's ski destinations in recent times due to the fact Korea will host the 2018 Winter Olympics and they will be held in the heart of Gangwon province. Gangwon province on the east coast of Korea is a great choice with guaranteed snowfall and many other attractions like hot springs, water parks in the area. Korea is just a ten hour flight from Sydney, so a lot closer to home than the ski-fields of Europe or the US and Canada.

Korea’s ski season runs from mid-December to mid-March with the best ski months being January and February when the greatest snowfalls occur. During the ski season several fun ski festivals take place where foreign skiers can join in the fun and compete against others from around the world. Major snow and ice festivals also take place including ice-fishing and ice-carving exhibitions.

Korea is getting ready to host the Winter Olympics in three years time and at present many ski resorts are upgrading their facilities and accommodation. Pyeongchang at the heart of Gangwon Province is the host city and the nearby resorts of Yongpyong and Alpensia will host some of the major competition events like the downhill and ski jump.

Yongpyong has become in recent years well known to Australian skiers. It provides the perfect atmosphere for skiing and snowboarding with fresh powder snow and well organised facilities. The mountain has more than 25kms of groomed slopes, fifteen chair lifts, a 3.7km gondola and a terrain park for all levels of skiers. The mountain also offers great night skiing with lifts open daily from 8.30am to midnight offering non-stop ski action.

Yongpyong Resort has excellent facilities and activities including the massive ‘Peak Island’ water theme park with hot springs, sledding, bowling alleys and more. It also has an area called ‘Dragon Park’ offering half pipe, quarter pipe, ramp, table top, spine, washboard, rail slider, mogul and wave ski experiences.
