Dubai to have the world’s first underwater tennis court

Dubai will soon have an underwater stadium. An architect from Poland has proposed a strange court beneath the sea.

An underwater tennis complex will be built offshore in the Persian Gulf between Burj al Arab and the Palm Jumeirah islands.

It will be a sports arena and an aquarium. The seven complex calls for a rooftop coral reef. Spectators will not only watch the match in progress but also get to watch the rich diversity in the marine world.

If this plan turns to reality, it will require some formidable engineering challenges. A single piece of glass large enough to cover the structure and strong enough to withstand the water pressure inside the ocean will be required.

Krysztof Kotala, the architect of the proposed stadium studied at London’s Royal Institute of British Architects, Poland’s Krakow Polytechnic, and Germany’s the Münster University of Applied. He thinks that the stadium would make the perfect venue for future a fifth Grand Slam.
