Shanghai to be Host City for CITM 2012,

        Shanghai is the economic, financial, shipping and trade center, as well as an important tourist destination in China. With an advantageous geographic location and convenient transport facilities, Shanghai has time-honored close contact with the rest of the world in terms of politics, economy, culture and tourism. As a new economic growth point of Shanghai, tourism has made great progress. Today, the city boasts 297 star-rated hotels and 1283 travel services. In 2011, Shanghai received more than 8.17 million international tourist arrivals, creating over US$ 5.8 billion international tourism receipts; at the same time, domestic tourists totaled 231 million, creating domestic tourism receipts of RMB 276.4 billion yuan. The total tourism revenue amounted to RMB 323.1 billion yuan. Tourism has become a promising industry among Shanghai’s tertiary industry.

         Shanghai is a famous historical and cultural city of China harmonizing Oriental and Western cultures. Besides traditional tourist attractions, such as the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, the Pudong New Area and Zhujiajiao, an ancient town standing by the Dianshan Lake, some other newly-developed areas are attracting more and more visitors. 

         Shanghai has become a shopping paradise for domestic and overseas travelers -- the city has developed numerous venues for shopping, sightseeing and leisure life, including the famous Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road, Sichuan Road, Yuyuan Tourist Mart, Xujiahui Commercial City, and the shopping center at the new railway station.

         Shanghai attaches great importance to developing international MICE industry. By the end of 2011, Shanghai has 10 large exhibition centers with an indoor exhibition area of 500,000 sq m, and meeting and convention area of almost 100,000 sq m. Shanghai plays host to almost 400 important international conventions and exhibitions every year.
