Art Meets the Wild: Cambodia’s Cardamom Tented Camp Launches Inspiring Artist-in-Residence Program

Cardamom Tented Camp in Cambodia
A New Creative Experience Deep in Cambodia’s Rainforest

In a groundbreaking initiative that blends art, conservation and immersive travel, Cardamom Tented Camp in Cambodia has announced the launch of an exciting Artist-in-Residence Program. Set within one of Southeast Asia’s most pristine rainforest environments, the program invites Cambodian artists to create nature-inspired works while engaging guests through interactive workshops and cultural experiences.

Located in the heart of Botum Sakor National Park, Cardamom Tented Camp is accessible only by river and surrounded by more than 18,000 hectares of protected indigenous forest. The remote eco-lodge has built an international reputation for its commitment to sustainable tourism and rainforest conservation, and the new residency program adds a vibrant cultural dimension to the guest experience.

Nature as the Ultimate Artistic Inspiration

The inaugural residency will welcome Khmer artist Im Pesey from 21 June to 5 July. Entitled “Melody of the Forest,” the residency will see the artist immersed in the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the rainforest as he develops a unique collection of works inspired by the natural world.

Rather than simply documenting the forest landscape, Pesey intends to capture the emotions, memories and sensory experiences that emerge from spending time in such an extraordinary environment. His creative output is expected to include watercolour paintings, ink wash studies, mixed-media sketches and a series of small and medium-scale artworks.

According to the artist, the residency will provide an opportunity to explore the delicate relationship between humans and nature while translating the rainforest’s moods and rhythms into expressive visual forms.

Guests Invited to Create Alongside the Artists

One of the most exciting aspects of the Artist-in-Residence Program is the opportunity for guests to actively participate in the creative process.

During each residency, artists will host a minimum of two workshops where visitors can join guided sessions focused on nature observation, sketching and artistic expression. Designed for participants of all skill levels, the workshops offer a unique chance to slow down, connect with the environment and gain insight into an artist’s creative journey.

To support the initiative, Cardamom Tented Camp has established a dedicated open-air Art Pavilion where artists can work while surrounded by the sounds and scenery of the rainforest.

Supporting Cambodian Creativity and Conservation

The Artist-in-Residence Program has been designed to support Cambodia’s creative community while reinforcing the camp’s commitment to responsible tourism.

Marsha Niemeijer, Artist Residency Director at Cardamom Tented Camp, said the program aims to bring together artists whose work reflects themes of nature, conservation and tranquillity.

The residency welcomes a diverse range of creative disciplines, including painters, illustrators, sculptors, filmmakers, researchers and writers. By encouraging meaningful interaction between artists, guests and the natural environment, the camp hopes to foster a growing community centred around creativity and environmental awareness.

The concept was partly inspired by The Long Run’s internationally recognised 4Cs framework, which promotes a balance between Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce within responsible tourism operations.

Each participating artist will receive accommodation, full board and a stipend during their stay. In return, artists will donate at least one artwork created during the residency to become part of the camp’s permanent collection.

Over time, this will transform Cardamom Tented Camp into a living gallery showcasing original works inspired by one of Cambodia’s most remarkable natural landscapes.

Im Pesey’s collaboration with Phnom Penh’s Gallerist art gallery has also helped establish a strong foundation for the program, with additional residencies featuring Cambodian artists expected to be announced in the coming months.

Why Cardamom Tented Camp Is One of Cambodia’s Most Unique Eco-Lodges

For travellers seeking meaningful experiences beyond traditional sightseeing, Cardamom Tented Camp offers a rare combination of luxury, adventure, wildlife conservation and cultural engagement.

Guests can explore untouched rainforest, kayak along scenic waterways, participate in conservation activities and now engage directly with some of Cambodia’s emerging artistic talents. The new residency program further enhances the camp’s appeal as a destination where nature, culture and sustainable tourism come together in a truly memorable way.

As global travellers increasingly seek authentic experiences that support local communities and environmental protection, Cardamom Tented Camp continues to set a benchmark for responsible travel in Southeast Asia.

Planning Your Stay

Bookings during the Artist-in-Residence Program offer guests the opportunity to experience both Cambodia’s extraordinary natural beauty and its thriving creative culture.

Additional artist residencies featuring Cambodian creatives are expected to be announced throughout the year, providing new opportunities for visitors to experience the rainforest through different artistic perspectives.
