MCEC Raises Dough for the Good Friday Appeal 12 Years Running

Good Friday Appeal
MCEC’s Sweet Tradition Powers the Good Friday Appeal

In a heartwarming blend of community spirit, culinary creativity and family fun, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre has once again delivered a standout moment at this year’s Good Friday Appeal. Marking 12 consecutive years of support, MCEC’s spectacular hot cross bun installation proved that meaningful travel experiences can also give back in powerful ways.

Held as part of the beloved Kids Day Out, this annual Easter tradition continues to draw families from across Melbourne, combining entertainment with vital fundraising for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

A 40 Metre Easter Showstopper

This year, MCEC took its signature hot cross bun display to new heights, unveiling an impressive 40 metre table filled with freshly baked treats. The installation, double the size of last year’s display, quickly became a highlight of the event.

A total of 6,000 hot cross buns were prepared and sold within hours, delighting thousands of visitors who gathered to celebrate Easter while contributing to a meaningful cause.

Behind the Bake

Creating this large scale culinary masterpiece required dedication and precision. MCEC’s expert pastry team worked tirelessly over 48 hours, with 12 chefs producing an incredible 500 kilograms of spiced chocolate dough.

The recipe included 90 kilograms of chocolate chips, 220 kilograms of flour and 500 eggs, resulting in soft, flavour-packed buns that became an instant crowd favourite.

The effort was not just about baking, but about creating moments of joy for families attending the event.

A Day of Family Fun and Giving Back

The Kids Day Out event transformed MCEC into a vibrant hub of activity, where families enjoyed entertainment, activities and food, all while supporting a life changing cause.

The Good Friday Appeal raised a record breaking 25,268,485 dollars this year, helping fund critical care, research and equipment for The Royal Children’s Hospital. Every hot cross bun purchased contributed to this extraordinary outcome.

A Partnership That Makes a Difference

MCEC’s long standing partnership with the Good Friday Appeal plays a vital role in bringing the event to life each year. Through venue support, event expertise and culinary innovation, the centre continues to create an experience that unites the community.

The collaboration also supports the return of the Channel 7 Telethon, further amplifying fundraising efforts and awareness across the state.

Why This Experience Matters for Travellers

For visitors to Melbourne, events like the Good Friday Appeal’s Kids Day Out offer more than entertainment. They provide a chance to experience the city’s strong sense of community and generosity.

It is a reminder that travel can be both enjoyable and impactful, connecting people through shared experiences while supporting important causes.
