Step into the fairytale Japanese village of Shirakawa-go, nestled deep within the mountains of Gifu Prefecture.
The farmhouses here are characterised by steeply-pitched thatched-roofs, referred to as gassho-zukuri, meaning “hands pressed together in prayer”.
These roofs are designed to help snow slide off easily, as they are located in a region with heavy snowfall during the winter season.
You can choose to spend the night in one of these centuries-old farmhouses, once famous for cultivating silkworms, in a cosy futon on the tatami floor and enjoy dinner around a Japanese-stye open hearth.
