ADB INSIGHT: REOPENING TOURISM

Tourism is a bedrock of the Asia Pacific economy. Some 700 million people holiday here in a normal year. But 2020 is not a normal year. Hotels, airports, and airlines have been brought to a virtual standstill by the quarantines and lockdowns that followed the outbreak of COVID-19. The industry stands to lose 70 million jobs plus $1.1 trillion in GDP. Tourism leaders say the industry is too important to sit idle for too much longer. But how do we get tourism moving again during a global pandemic? What precautions will operators and travelers themselves have to take? And how will the industry need to adapt in order to survive?

ADB Insight is a webcast series produced by the Asian Development Bank that takes a hard, informative, and lively look at key development issues facing Asia and the Pacific. Hosted by former BBC presenter Nisha Pillai, ADB Insight brings together important guests from government, development, policy, academia, and the private sector to discuss and analyze subjects, stories, and solutions that are central to the work of ADB and the goal of a more prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific.
