Xi’an, capital of China’s Shaanxi Province, is a popular destination for its many cultural and historical treasures, among them the famous Terracotta Warriors. That popularity has been growing, according to a recent report from the provincial tourism authority.
More than 500 million tourists have visited the city during the past five years, producing tourism income of nearly 402 billion yuan (approximately USD61.5 billion) over the same period. According to the report, the city’s tourism revenue grew 21.5 percent over the same five-year period.
The report credits the city’s recent tourism growth to its advanced transportation infrastructure – airports, railroads and highways – as well as its many tourism resources and archaeological attractions. Xi’an served as ancient China’s capital for 13 dynasties and houses some of China’s most valuable archaeological treasures, including the Mausoleum of the Qinshihuang, the first emperor of a united China, and his famous stone army of terra cotta warriors from the 3rd century B.C., unearthed in 1974.
