Now in their 26th year, the awards acknowledge tourism operators that have demonstrated outstanding achievement throughout the year. The winners of each category will be announced at a black-tie event in Sydney on November 26, 2015, and these will progress to the Australian Tourism Awards early next year.
The four Port Stephens operators nominated are:
- Port Stephens 4WD Tours – in the Adventure Tourism category
- Halifax Holiday Park in the Caravan and Holiday park category
- Port Stephens Visitor Information Centre in the Visitor Information and Services category
- Sand Dune Adventures in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tourism category.
Offering quadbike tours of the largest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere, Sand Dunes Adventures is a not-for-profit tourism enterprise owned and operated by the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council. In addition to quad bike tours, it also offers hummer safari tours which focus on the Aboriginal and European occupancy of the dunes.
Also located on the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, Port Stephens 4WD takes passengers across the white sand dunes to the Sygna Shipwreck and “Tin City”, a collection of fishing shacks with a number of WWII relics, while also offering passengers opportunities to sand-board and surf down the dunes.
Halifax Holiday Park is set in natural bushland, surrounded by Shoal Bay and Little Beach, and is just a 15 minute walk from Nelson Bay. A favourite for boating enthusiasts, the park offers a range of accommodation from one-bedroom cabins to three-bedroom luxury villas overlooking Shoal Bay Beach.
The Port Stephens Visitor Information Centre in Nelson Bay is one-stop-shop for details on local attractions, upcoming events and accommodation.
