Domestic Tourism is Main Bread and Butter of Indian Tourism

With over 1 billion domestic tourists travelling pan-India compared to 6.5 million international travellers, domestic tourism is undoubtedly the main bread and butter of Indian tourism, revealed Giri Shankar, tourism additional secretary.

Tourism sector provides employment to 10.2 million people in the country including direct and indirect employment.

“We are targeting 25 million additional employments by the end of five-year plan. Tourism is one sector which provides maximum employment compared to any other sector,” said the tourism additional secretary at the 2nd International Tourism Mart held in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.

Speaking on prospects of sustainable tourism in Northeast India, he said, “Every state has become conscious after the Uttarakhand incident. Therefore, we have to see the carrying capacity of the states in Northeast and act accordingly.”
