Adam Scott Makes History at The Masters

Queenslander Adam Scott has broken Australia's hoodoo at Augusta, making sporting history by becoming the first Aussie to claim the green jacket in the tournament's illustrious history.

It took the 32 year old two playoff holes to take the title from his Presidents Cup partner Angel Cabrera, but with a birdie on the 10th Scott claimed his first Major, and redemption from the 2012 Open Championship.

"I found my way today, there was some luck there somewhere. I don't know how to digest it all at the moment, it was incredible," said Scott.

"The thing that I did well out there was just stay right where I was, wherever that was on the golf course, I stayed in that one shot."

"To make a couple of putts to win the Masters tournament is just an amazing feeling."

The significance of the occasion was not lost on any fan of Australian sport, and none more so than Scott himself, who screamed 'Come on Aussie' to compatriot and playing partner Marc Leishman after sinking a birdie putt on 18 to go to the outright lead.

"Australia, it's a proud sporting nation and this was one notch in the belt that we never got. It's amazing that it has come down to me today, Marc and Jason Day, it could have been any of us," said Scott who also paid homage to one of Australia's greatest ever golfers, his childhood hero and mentor, The Great White Shark.

"There was one guy that inspired a nation of golfers and that's Greg Norman, he has been incredible to me and all the young golfers in Australia and part of this definitely belongs to him."

Speaking from Augusta, Brian Thorburn, CEO of the PGA of Australia said he felt privileged to witness the historic win, and was thrilled that Adam would now receive the recognition he deserves.

"No words can describe how happy we are for Adam," said Thorburn.

"Throughout his career Adam has been an incredible ambassador for Australian golf and he continues to come home and support the PGA Tour of Australasia year after year."

"For years he's carried the weight of expectation and answered countless questions about when his time would come. Finally, it's here, and I congratulate him on behalf of the entire golf community."

Thorburn also said that the overall result, with Jason Day and Marc Leishman also finishing inside the top five, is a strong indication of the strength of Australian golf.

"We've finally got a green jacket and we've clearly got the talent to go on to many more Major wins. But beyond today this will open up plenty of doors for Adam and Australian golf."

"All of Australia is talking about golf today, and that's a huge opportunity for our game."

In claiming the Masters, Scott finished at 9-under par alongside Angel Cabrera, two ahead of Jason Day in outright third.

Tiger Woods finished at 5-under par alongside Warnambool's Marc Leishman in T4.

Australia's only other contender, John Senden, finished at 2-over par in a tie for 35th.
