LA's jolliest time of year may be when the trophies are presented
No metropolis other than LA can lay claim to the concept of "Awards Season," when the best in entertainment get kudos from their peers, and the general public gets an opportunity to check out the celebs in person, whether at the ceremonies or outside on the red carpet. The good thing is that Awards Season is a lengthy one, usually spanning from Emmy Awards in the fall through the Oscars on the cusp of spring. People's Choice Awards (Jan. 9): Ring in the New Year with the People's Choice Awards at Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE. True to its name, the ceremony also sells tickets to the public on Ticketmaster, with prices within the relatively modest range of $60 to $170, while seat-filling opportunities through www.seatfiller.com are also available. Golden Globe Awards
(Jan. 13): In true Hollywood fashion, the Golden Globes are an invitation-only event. And folks who want an up-close-and-personal view of those making the grand entrances can grab a seat in the bleachers outside the Beverly Hilton, but only if they book a room at the hotel. Either way, the awards are bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press and are a pretty good indicator of how the Oscar race will shape up. (Jan. 27): More than a dozen awards to television and film performers will be given out during the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which have been given out since 1985. The SAG Awards can be attended via ticket only by SAG and AFTRA members, though www.seatfiller.com gives others a chance to be a seat-filler. (Feb. 10): The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will give music junkies and awards aficionados alike something to sing about. The ceremony is an invitation-only affair, but celebrity viewing is available in the bleacher seats outside STAPLES Center. In fact, 2012 marked the first year that the public could bid on bleacher seats through Grammy Charity Online Auctions, with proceeds benefitting MusicCares and the Grammy Foundation, though the deadline for that process was in late September. Additionally, a stone's throw away is the Grammy Museum, which provides additional opportunities for music fans to satiate their recording-history cravings. Admission to the museum is $12.95. Academy Awards
(Feb. 24): The Academy Awards have reigned as the awards-show supreme since the first Oscars ceremony was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt in 1929. Those wanting to soak up the glamour – the show itself is invitation-only – can do far worse than grabbing a bleacher seat right on Hollywood Boulevard and witness the stars before they walk into the Dolby (formerly Kodak) Theatre and possibly into film immortality. Go to http://www.oscars.org/insider/ and sign up for the lottery where tickets for the approximately 700 bleacher seats are doled out for those who sign up betweenlate September and mid-November (this year's deadline was Nov. 16).
