Winter Dutch Oven Dinner

HOSHINOYA Fuji, Japan's first glamping resort, will hold "Winter Dutch Oven Dinner" from December 1st, 2019 to March 15th, 2020. This dinner presents a hands-on course meal through which guests can enjoy wild game meat in an outdoor restaurant equipped with kotatsu warmers inside the woods. This winter, guests can fully enjoy the forest in winter in an even warmer environment with the addition of an aperitif hour around the bonfire, designed upon the hunter's lifestyle.

Why we offer “Winter Dutch Oven Dinner”
HOSHINOYA Fuji offers wild game caught by top-class local hunters. What is characteristic of wild game processed with appropriate technology and speed is that it has little odor specific to animals. The damage to agriculture and forestry due to the rapid increase in the deer and boar populations is a serious nationwide problem, and hunting and consumption are promoted even in Yamanashi Prefecture as a means to reduce their number. HOSHINOYA Fuji is developing cuisine by proposing new cooking methods and flavors of game meat, with the desire to promote its spread and contribute to the local community.

1. Experience “staying warm in forest during winter” inspired by the lifestyle of hunters
The foot of Mount Fuji is a severely cold region during winter. However, as their hunting becomes more serious, hunters, who spend a long time in the forest, come up with ways to warm themselves while they hunt.

Therefore, an aperitif hour is prepared during this dinner through which guests can enjoy hunter hot-pot cuisine around the bonfire, inspired by the lifestyle of hunters. Hunter hot-pots are dishes which warm the body, made by boiling seasonal vegetables in a rich stock from game meat. Around the bonfire, guests can experience smoking venison with straw, that will be served as a main dish, and enjoy dessert after the meal.

Example of dinner menu
Aperitif hour: A welcoming hunter hot-pot dish around the bonfire which warms the body
Appetizer: Grilled cheese fondue with whiskey
Main dish: Grilled straw-smoked venison and winter vegetables with wine sauce
Meal: Delicious venison and dried mushrooms cooked with rice
Dessert: Dried and winter fruits cooked in wine

2. Enjoy easy-to-eat winter game
Deer and boars during winter are fed mainly with bark and chaff, which reduces their fat. They are recommended for game meat first-timers because they are low-fat, healthy, and easy to eat, with few peculiarities. In addition, the low temperature allows the temperature of the game meat to be lowered rapidly, allowing guests to enjoy game meat of a higher quality. At this dinner, guests can savor the fine winter game meat caught by experienced hunters.

3. Enjoy cuisine with glamping masters at an outdoor restaurant with kotatsu warmers in a winter forest
This dinner is served in the Forest Kitchen, an outdoor restaurant in a forest at an altitude of about 900m. The temperature in the forest at winter sometimes gets below the freezing point, but the tables are exchanged with kotatsu warmers during winter only at the Forest Kitchen, creating an environment where guests can spend their time comfortably.

In addition, the cuisine is a hands-on course meal that utilizes outdoor equipment such as Dutch ovens and skillets and has guests grill and serve the ingredients themselves. The ingredients are prepared and seasoned in advance by Glamping Masters, who support the outdoor experience, enabling the guests to easily experience the appeal of enjoying a meal outdoors.

BLUES ON BROADBEACH 2020 – FIRST LINE-UP ANNOUNCEMENT

The streets, parks and venues across Broadbeach, QLD will rattle and hum to the sound of the blues once again for the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival.

Held across the central Gold Coast suburb over four days (May 14-17, 2020), this is one of the biggest free music festivals in Australia and with sensational dining, world famous beaches and ancient rainforests just a short drive away, this is the perfect event to base a Gold Coast long weekend around.

“Bringing in almost $30 million to the Gold Coast economy every year I’m not surprised to see that the big names keep lining up to be part of this quintessential Gold Coast event,” said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. “Our calendar of major events continues to grow and Blues on Broadbeach continues to be a favourite among locals and visitors alike.”

This solid 1st line-up boasts some of the best and most diverse blues artists the world has to offer and tips it’s fedora to the elder statesmen and to the new breed. May we present:

Check out the festival line-up video

Returning to Australia and performing for the first time at Blues on Broadbeach is Australian legend TOMMY EMMANUEL who is known as the international master of the acoustic guitar. With a music career that spans five decades, the two-time Grammy nominee has a deep musical diversity that ranges from authentic country-blues to rock. Emmanuel plays at hundreds of sold out shows around the world each year and impresses audiences with his emotional, authentic, and energetic performances.

“Nothing compares to playing at home,” said Tommy Emmanuel. “I’ve been looking forward to performing at Blues on Broadbeach for so long. My brother Phil used to perform there a lot over the years and he told me all about it. See you in May.”

Watch Tommy Emmanuel chatting about how excited he is to play at Blues on Broadbeach

The wonderfully curated line-up also features Guatemalan born singer-songwriter-producer GABY MORENO who wows international audiences with her Latin-inspired music that ranges from blues to jazz to soul. Moreno won a Latin Grammy for ‘Best New Artist’ and has shared the stage with international stars like Bono, Andrea Bocelli, and Tracy Chapman, and sings the theme song and voices a character on multi Emmy award-winning Disney show ‘Elena of Avalor’.

Joining these artists is ARIA award winner KARISE EDEN whose authentic storytelling and distinctive voice saw her rise to fame in 2012 when she won The Voice Australia. Eden arguably has one of the best female blues voices in the country and has topped the Australian charts breaking the record since The Beatles to have the most singles on the Australian ARIA chart in the top 10 at one time.

The multi-generational line-up will see Australian folk, rock and blues singer KIM CHURCHILL return to Blues on Broadbeach after performing at the festival when he was an emerging act many years ago. Churchill’s memorable sound has been described as “psychedelic whale music, ocean-side blues or cornified Nick Drake” by Vancouver Weekly, and he has gained a strong following among younger audiences.

Adding to the home-grown talent is award-winning quartet BONDI CIGARS, who have established themselves into Australia’s musical heart since their 1989 formation. The blues and roots band has maintained their status as one of the country’s most in-demand touring acts, performing over 150 shows each year and receiving consistent and widespread acclaim from both critics and fans.

“This festival has become part of Broadbeach’s cultural tapestry, the musicians, festival fans and local community all have an ownership over how its weaved,” said Festival Director Mark Duckworth. “It’s exciting to invite new acts from Australia and around the world to experience the incredible vibe of this event for the first time, whilst still sharing in the history with the artists who have helped us build it from the ground up.”

CMV announces two additional cruise ships for 2021

Pacific Dawn
British-based Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) has announced the acquisition of two more cruise ships to join its expanding ocean fleet – increasing to eight cruise ships in 2021.

The independently owned CMV Group will take delivery of P&O Australia’s Pacific Dawn and Pacific Aria in Singapore on 2 March and 2 May 2021 respectively, increasing CMV’s capacity to 9,000 berths and an increase in passenger capacity by 30% in 2021.

The duo will be officially re-named in mid-2021, following dry docking in Singapore where some minor upgrades will be completed, and the ships’ livery updated. The vessels will then embark on maiden positioning voyages via the Suez Canal to Northern Europe.

Pacific Dawn (to be renamed) at 70,285grt, with 798 passenger cabins and carrying around 1,400 passengers, will be deployed to the UK market in late May 2021, bolstering much-needed capacity and cruising year-round alongside Columbus ex-London Tilbury.

Pacific Aria (to be renamed) at 55,819grt, with 630 passenger cabins and carrying around 1,100 passengers, will be deployed to the German market under the TransOcean Kreuzfahrten brand with a much-needed increase in capacity, cruising alongside Vasco da Gama and replacing the 580 passenger Astor. Astor is being re-named Jules Verne and will be re-deployed to the French market in May 2021.

CEO Christian Verhounig commented, “The introduction of two more ships to the global ocean fleet is the next exciting chapter of our strategic growth objectives. This will enable us to service increasing market demand for our traditional brand of cruising, generated by our expanding international network of in-house sales offices and developing source markets. We have now acquired five cruise ships in just five years and are firmly on course in carrying 200,000 passengers in 2021.”

The new ship names will be unveiled later in December 2019 under CMV’s explorer theme, providing a more traditional cruise experience that can access harder-to-reach ports.

Chris Coates, Group Commercial Director, added, “As the CMV brand continues to evolve, the growing popularity of our traditional product, classic ships and destination-focused cruise programs has encouraged us to accelerate plans to add capacity to the two top European cruise markets in the UK and Germany, which represent 85% of our business.

“These two fine cruise ships perfectly complement our existing fleet, providing trade partners and consumers alike with much needed extra capacity. For 2020, we expect close to 70% of capacity to be sold by the year end, in line with expectations. This provides an ideal platform for the early introduction of new tonnage and opportunities for 2021.”

CMV Australia’s Managing Director, Dean Brazier, welcomed the announcement. “Our newest ship, Vasco da Gama, will arrive to Australian shores for the first time with CMV this Sunday.

“As with Vasco da Gama, the two new ships joining our global fleet are a perfect example of the strong growth and strategic direction of Cruise & Maritime Voyages. They will enable us to meet the growing demand for travel aboard traditional, smaller vessels, as we have seen in Australasia.

“The growth of our global group is good news for all, providing more opportunities for new itineraries, and more options for Australians to book international cruises, for which we have seen a massive increase over the past year. Cruise & Maritime Voyages is really carving a niche as a cruise line offering traditional, quality cruising on small to mid-sized ships at a competitive price point.

Pacific Aria
“We look forward to building on our success in Australasia, and to introducing even more guests to what we believe is an exceptional and memorable travel offering.”

The inaugural 2021 programs will go on sale via travel trade and CMV’s international sales offices and websites during Q1-2020, with special 2021 launch incentives planned to encourage early bookings.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve: A Successful Ecotourism Journey From Degraded Sugar Plantation to Native Forest

Thala Beach Nature Reserve (Port Douglas, Australia) first opened its doors over 2 decades ago in 1997 and since then has never closed. Open 24 hours a day 7 days a week Thala has hosted approximately over 600 000 guests and diners.

Now in its 22nd year of operation, Thala has taken a moment to look back at the vegetation on the land in its original state and compare it to present day. The positive results of Thala’s revegetation efforts are clearly noticeable.

Above: An aerial photograph taken in 1985 of the original degraded sugar cane plantation compared to a recent 2019 photograph where Thala Beach Nature Reserve currently operates. After 2 decades of revegetation and forest rehabilitation the increase in native vegetation is astounding.

Through ongoing tree planting, weed eradicating, habitat and biosphere improvements combined with ecotourism practices Thala has seen a dramatic increase in native forest, biodiversity and wildlife populations.

Brett Kelly and David Anderson lead Thala's environment team and have spearheaded Thala’s forest rehabilitation since the beginning of the resort's journey.

“Where exotic weeds were extensively removed they were replanted with local natives. Lots of plants were propagated on-site with a preference for bird and butterfly host plants. This has significantly boosted observed bird species, our current bird species sighting list is around 194 and growing," says Brett Kelly.

“Thala now has a markedly improved biosphere which has encouraged new populations of echidnas and increased numbers of spiders and native bees."

Green Ant numbers have increased and have been used on occasion for wasp control for the last 15 years. According to Brett, “One good green ant nest will take out a wasp nest.”

Above: Thala Beach Nature Reserve is situated on a private headland between Cairns and Port Douglas, Australia.

The Vine Thicket Forest, seen clearly in the original 1985 photo along the beach front of the property, was the only original forested area on the land. This is a unique type of forest that only grows on a thin layer of compost. Once the forest is removed it rarely recovers. At Thala it was left in its natural state and preserved. Unfortunately, this fragile type of forest has been heavily cleared as a result of coastal development and expansion elsewhere.

In fact, this original Vine Thicket Forest only exists today because in the early 1970’s Rob Prettejohn was growing sugar cane on the property, which had a 1700 tonne assignment. One day he received a ‘Show Cause’ notice from the government to clear some 15 acres of rain forest behind the fore dunes. Rob refused to do so and as a consequence his cane assignment was reduced as a penalty. A poignant example of how public policy has evolved over the last 50 years.

Genuine local species of plants, some of which were propagated locally and some which were encouraged to flourish, were deliberately used in the forest rehabilitation, aiming to expand and enhance the fragile native forest while keeping it in a natural looking state.
Inspiration for the landscape design around the swimming pool was directly influenced by photographing and examining nearby creeks and waterfalls leading to unique native species being sourced, propagated on-site and planted. An approach ahead of its time.

The physical removal of weeds and over planting to outcompete weeds was a long term strategy Brett Kelly and his team used to combat invasive exotic plants, and it has paid off. Weed trees are now outnumbered by natives and no longer considered a threat.

Above: Thala Beach Nature Reserve's eco accommodation options are sensitively positioned amongst 145 acres of original and restored forest.

Hand in hand with Thala’s ongoing revegetation works is also an effort to reduce landfill by removing plastic bottles, straws and re-usable coffee cups from the property. Guests are now provided with a complimentary stainless steel water bottle upon check in and encouraged to re-fill it not only during their stay at Thala but also on their onward journey to other destinations. This change in behaviour not only saves 1000s of bottles and cups from entering landfill each year but also educates Thala’s guests, hopefully building a more eco-conscious traveller to take these ideas and inspiration with them when they depart.

A preference for local ingredients at Thala’s Osprey’s Restaurant has lowered food miles. On-site wastewater treatment, the sharing and acknowledgement of local indigenous culture, guest education, local employment, elimination of selected single use plastics, recycling and passive cooling incorporated into building design are all important aspects of eco tourism embraced at Thala. This approach has led to Thala being awarded the highest Advanced Eco Tourism accreditation from Eco Tourism Australia and granted membership to the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World program, both of which have strict guidelines and auditing processes to adhere to.
Left: The main building at Thala Beach Nature Reserve embraces the surrounding forest with its tropical design and high ceilings.

The creators and owners of Thala Beach Nature Reserve, Rob and Oonagh Prettejohn are proud of how far their vision has come.

“Travelling, as pioneers, along our chosen path as eco-developers has rewarded us with a rich sense of achievement. We, since early childhood, have had an empathy for nature. And our vision embraces the use of scientific and husbandry principles to care for natural ecosystems, as well as creating and enhancing degraded environments. In such a way that people and the natural world both prosper and coexist. We are very proud of Thala Beach Nature Reserve and, I believe, it is the embodiment of this philosophy,” says Robert Prettejohn.

“Above all, we are very proud to be associated with our dedicated staff who have overwhelmingly embraced these principles and have created the Thala Beach Nature Reserve you can see and experience today.”
Thala Beach Nature Reserve is held in high esteem by many locals, travellers, nature lovers and organisations around the world

Winter Illumination of “Neburi Nagashi Toro” Celebrates 9th Year of Aomoriya’s Seasonal Scenery

From December 1st, 2019 to March 31st, 2020, Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya, the hotel where guests can fully enjoy the culture of Aomori, will hold the annual Neburi Nagashi Toro, a breathtaking winter event where small lanterns and Nebuta floats will be floating on the ponds around the open-air bath Ukiyu.

Open-air bath takes guests back in time to the age of Neburi Nagashi, the origin of the Aomori Nebuta Festival Toro Nagashi---a ritual that banishes the demons of drowsiness, and washes impurities into the river and the sea---is called Neburi Nagashi inthe Tohoku region, and is claimed to be the origin of Aomori Nebuta Festival. Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya will reproduce Neburi Nagashi by floating Nebuta floats and small lanterns that carry people’s wishes on the ponds around Ukiyu. Guests can enjoy the event claimed to be the origin of Aomori’s most famous summer festival from an open-air bath in midwinter.

Aomoriya’s original Nebuta float “Vaisravana”
The motif of Nebuta float is Vaisravana, a deity worshiped as the guardian of the north and the one who brings wisdom and good fortune. It is specially created for Neburi Nagashi Toro by Hiroo Takenami, a Nebuta artist. Vaisravana wields a spear in his right hand and a pagoda in his left, and his expression glares at the demons.

Profile of Hiroo Takenami, the renowned Nebuta artist Hiroo Takenami is a Nebuta artist who received the Best Artist Award at the 2018 Aomori Nebuta Festival, the highest award that an artist can receive. Nebuta floats are rated based on factors like the liveliness of their expressions and colors, and the composition of the float. Like the floats parade in the real festival, the Vaisravana float that is used in Aomoriya’s Neburi Nagashi Toro begins as a rough sketch, and is created with a focus on vivid colors and the composition of the float.

Perspective for the future
With the guiding principle of “Noresore Aomori (Full Experience of Aomori Culture),” Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya has strived to build facilities that can share the festivals, food, and traditional crafts of Aomori with people from other places. GROWING SYDNEY'S NIGHT-TIME ECONOMY

The NSW Government will enhance Sydney’s night-time economy with extended trading hours for venues and bottle shops, a relaxation of after-midnight drink rules and other changes to be introduced from January.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the initiatives introduced five years ago had undoubtedly made Sydney safer, but now was the right time for change in the CBD, particularly with light rail services commencing soon.

“Sydney has transformed dramatically over recent years, and we need to ensure we have a strong and vibrant night-time economy that reflects our position as Australia’s only truly global city,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“Following a detailed review of the Joint Select Committee’s recommendations, we will implement changes over summer to ensure Sydney has a thriving, safe and diverse night life that can be enjoyed by all.

“While the extended trading hours will provide a boost for the night-time economy, community safety will always be a focus.”

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said an enhanced night-time economy would provide a huge boost for tourism, providing another incentive for people to visit Sydney.

“It’s time to embrace a 24 hour economy that creates jobs, fosters arts, culture, live performance and safety on our streets. You don’t have to trade safety for liveability but we all need to take responsibility for making Sydney the best it can be,” Mr Ayres said.

“Sydney is Australia’s number one tourism destination, with the world’s most iconic harbour, scenic beaches, world-class transport, and a vibrant arts and culture scene.”

Consistent with the Joint Select Committee’s recommendations, existing arrangements will be maintained in the Kings Cross precinct.

The Government will monitor the impact of these changes and conduct a review after 12 months. Minister Ayres will be responsible for the implementation and review of the NSW Government response.
