Keith Duffy Lends a Hand to Boost Tourism

Boyzone singer and Coronation Street star Keith Duffy flew into Manchester last week, to help promote Ireland and a giant Manchester ‘Gathering’ in County Mayo.

Keith was encouraging Mancunians with a connection to, or interest in, Ireland to come and join the Manchester Mayo Gathering, which takes place 1st–9th August and enjoy their rich culture, traditions and heritage. There was an extra-special call-out to Irish sons and daughters from Levenshume, South Manchester, which has the largest Mayo community outside of the West of Ireland. As part of his support for The Gathering, Tourism Ireland arranged for Keith to talk to a number of media in Manchester, including BBC Radio Manchester and the Manchester Evening News, about The Gathering and the many great things to see and do on a holiday in Ireland.

Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “Tourism Ireland is delighted to support next month’s Manchester Mayo Gathering, which looks set to be hugely successful. We were really pleased to have Keith Duffy on board this week, to help us reach out to the Irish Diaspora and promote Ireland in Manchester. The Gathering Ireland is a key focal point of all Tourism Ireland’s promotional activity around the globe in 2013, particularly in countries with a strong Diaspora connection – including Great Britain, the US, Canada and Australia. The Gathering offers an outstanding opportunity to connect with our Diaspora and most importantly, to give them a compelling reason to visit Ireland ‘now’ and Tourism Ireland has a busy programme of promotions under way to capitalise fully on that opportunity.”

Keith Duffy said: “This is going to be one of the biggest and best Gatherings to happen in Ireland this year and there is already a great deal of buzz leading up to the Manchester Mayo get-together – you can really feel the excitement. It promises to be a lot of fun and it will be great to see the Manchester Irish descend on Mayo.”

Tony Hennigan, co-ordinator of the Manchester Mayo Gathering, said: “We are really looking forward to this historical event taking in place in Mayo. The connections between Manchester and Ireland are very strong. Plans have been under way for a year and we’re delighted to be celebrating this link to Ireland and our heritage. Levenshulme in South Manchester is home to the biggest Mayo community outside of the West of Ireland and hundreds of Mancunians are expected to travel. There will be a fantastic atmosphere in Mayo over the week.”

The Manchester Mayo Gathering will be one of the biggest ‘Gatherings’ in Ireland this year – it is set to attract over 100,000 people during the nine-day festival. It will involve over 120 events and includes a performance by multi award-winning Lord of the Dance star James Keegan, also from Manchester.

2013 Australian Outback Marathon Attracts Record Numbers & Global Runners

Ayers Rock Resort played host to the 4th Australian Outback Marathon on Saturday, 27 July 2013. Set amongst one of the most iconic backdrops in the world, a record number of entrants from over 25 countries pounded the red dust with spectacular views of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Race organiser and sports tour operator, Travelling Fit, designed the event four years ago to be enjoyed by all levels of running abilities offering four different events - a full marathon, half marathon and two fun runs. Most of the race course is plotted on unsealed roads, trails and bush tracks throughout Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

The Marathon is set to become a major event on the Australian running calendar, with participation increasing annually, almost doubling in size since the first event was held in 2010.

"This year, around 300 participants from over 25 countries ran in the event including the USA, UK, Germany and Japan. We aim to continually grow this unique event to become a major highlight for competitors on the Australian running calendar," says Travelling Fit Business Development Manager Michael Walton.

With the combined support of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia and Travelling Fit, students from the local Pipalyatjara Anangu, Ernabella Anangu and Amata Schools are encouraged to partake in the event with annual sponsorship. This year, 40 students from these local schools participated in the event.

In addition, Voyages supports The Deadly Fun Run Championships, held at the Resort on Saturday, 13 July 2013. The Deadly Fun Run Series is an initiative set up by Rob de Castella's Indigenous Marathon Project, in a bid to promote healthy living, and increase participation in running in remote Indigenous communities.

Voyages Managing Director Koos Klein says, "We are thrilled to support initiatives like the Australian Outback Marathon and The Deadly Fun Run Championships as they engage, raise and promote awareness of healthy living in local Indigenous communities."

The next annual Australia Outback Marathon will be held on Saturday, 26 July 2014.

Russians Prefer To Book Their Holidays At The Last Moment- ITB Berlin

Booking one’s holidays at the last possible moment continues to be a popular trend: among the world’s most important travel markets last-minute bookings make up the biggest percentage of holidays. Russian citizens in particular prefer to book their holidays at short notice (less than a month before departing). This is the result of a special survey by IPK International’s World Travel Monitor, which was commissioned by ITB Berlin. Among the top ten international source markets for travel abroad (with at least one overnight) Russia reported the highest percentage of last-minute bookings. In 2012 Russians booked 73 per cent of their trips at the last moment, less than one month before departing. The habit of booking trips late has always been popular in Russia. Over the past five years the trend towards booking travel at the last moment has remained unchanged and has fluctuated hardly at all.

The Italian and Chinese markets also clearly belong in the same category. Unlike in Russia last-minute bookings in the above markets have declined. In 2008 69 per cent of Italian holidaymakers booked their trips at the last moment, whereas in 2012 that figure was only 64 per cent. In China the number of last-minute bookings fell from 73 per cent in 2008 to 62 per cent in 2012. At 58 per cent and 53 per cent respectively last-minute bookings in Japan and France were comparatively low, although both markets reported a slight upward trend. In 2008 the figure for Japan was 53 per cent and for France it was 51 per cent. At 46 per cent, the German market’s share of last-minute bookings was relatively high. However, compared with other western European countries this figure was below average.

When it comes to their next holidays the Dutch prefer to make their plans in advance. At 33 per cent the Dutch market reported the highest percentage of early bookings (four months or more before departing). Nevertheless, there is a shift taking place here too: over the last five years early bookings have fallen by 27 per cent. At 29 and 28 per cent respectively, the German and UK markets also reported a relatively high percentage of early bookings. In Germany last-minute bookings have fallen by six per cent since 2008, whereas in the UK they have risen slightly, by four per cent. Early bookings are of only minor importance in Russia, China and Japan. In 2012 only six per cent of Russian holidaymakers and eight per cent each of Chinese and Japanese travellers booked their trips four months or more in advance.

Commenting, Dr. Martin Buck, director of Travel & Logistics at Messe Berlin, said: “The fact that the various source markets report widely differing booking habits could carry an important message for all those commercial providers who are already operating in the respective markets or are planning to do so. The intense level of debate on this subject, which in Germany at least has been taking place over the last few years, is an indicator of how important the aspect of booking ahead is when buying a holiday. We are delighted that conducting market surveys of this kind gives us the opportunity to provide the travel industry with even more essential information that extends far beyond the traditional function of our show.“

Vietnam Tourist Arrivals to Thailand on Pace for Record Year

Despite Vietnam’s currently sluggish economy that is expected to have a GDP growth 5.04% to 5.35% this year, Vietnamese tourist arrivals to Thailand are on pace to surpass arrivals in 2012. More than 618,000 Vietnamese came to Thailand last year.

The first five months of 2013 saw Thailand receiving 260,621 Vietnamese visitors, a rise of 10.40% over the corresponding period in 2012. The economic slowdown in Vietnam is having a beneficial effect on Thai tourism as travelers look for short-haul holiday destinations to save costs. Taking advantage of this trend, earlier this month VietJet Air, a low-cost carrier of Vietnam, launched a Hanoi to Bangkok service, flying seven times a week. The Hanoi flights are in addition to those from Ho Chi Minh City that the airline started in February this year. The VietJet Air flights bring the total of air connections between Vietnam and Thailand to 104 flights weekly.

Thailand is proving to be a popular holiday spot for Vietnamese tourists due to the country’s proximity to Vietnam, its attractive value for money and its good range of tourist attractions. Apart from the flights, overland travel is becoming a favorable option because of the presence of many Indochina roads crossing from Vietnam into Laos and ending in Thailand. Tourist traffic from Vietnam’s central region covering Hue, Danang and Quang Tri has risen significantly since the opening of the second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge spanning the Mekong River at Savannakhet in Laos and Mukdahan in northeastern Thailand.

Mr. Thanik Khachonkittisakul (Nguyen Van Tho), Managing Director of Thai2020, a Thai tour operator serving the Vietnamese market, says, “Our company has been receiving many Vietnamese tour groups from early this year, and we have plenty of future bookings till year’s end. Many are opting for the big-city shopping opportunities of Bangkok and the seaside entertainment atmosphere of Pattaya.” His company is also getting some large MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) groups from Vietnam as Vietnamese corporations dish out trip rewards to their employees and vendors for past sales performance. Mr. Thanik adds, “Vietnamese companies are finding out that Thailand is a great place to have meetings and corporate activities. We have a wide selection of affordable accommodation all over the country, and our convention support services and logistics facilitation are among the best in Asia.”

However, according to Mr. Thanik, the most important reason why Thailand is a hot destination for Vietnamese travelers is the country’s renowned hospitality. Mr. Thanik says, “Our Vietnamese customers find that Thais share many of the same social and family values as they do, making them feel immediately right at home. Even when they face problems with the tour programs or language communication, Thai tour operators never abandon them and quickly find a solution. I have been told by several Vietnamese clients that they get memorable service every time they come here.”

COVERED IN ART, INSIDE AND OUT: GIANT SIX-STOREY ARTWORK VEILS MCA

Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority will soon begin cleaning the east-facing façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) to preserve and reinvigorate its quayside exterior. But unlike most building works, the scaffold surrounding the iconic building won't be covered by a dull wrap – it will be transformed into an enormous six-storey high public artwork that will unravel and evolve over three months.

From Friday 5 July, the artwork will begin to reveal itself in the first of five stages to be carried out over the 89-day period of scaffold construction and disassembly, and will be more than 2,300 square metres at its optimal phase by early August.

Following the fantastic recent success of The Rocks Windmill and Vivid Festival, The Rocks precinct is building a reputation as an arts hub, with the Foreshore Authority championing public art activation, supported by the MCA in commissioning the two artists who will undertake this ambitious project.

The otherwise blank white scaffold covering will be used as a canvas by artists Mike Hewson and Agatha Gothe-Snape, who will collaborate on what is a creative approach to the maintenance of one of Sydney’s most recognised buildings, says Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority CEO Catherine Gallagher.

“We’re very mindful of the MCA building’s prominence on the Sydney panorama.” said Ms Gallagher, “As leaders in place making, the cleaning work presents the Authority with an opportunity to add a stunning large-scale contemporary artwork to the landscape, creating an intriguing and memorable experience for locals and visitors to our city.”

Contemporary as well as relevant, this project taps into the trend of public place making that is embraced by artists the world over. Public place making and large-scale art go hand in hand, working together in a symbiotic relationship to enhance public spaces with somewhat incongruous and imaginative artworks that encourage the passer-by to imagine, re-evaluate and critically engage with their ‘everyday’ environments.

Olafur Eliasson’s The New York City Waterfalls, in which the artist constructed four man-made waterfalls on the city’s foreshore, stands as one of the most stunning examples of contemporary large-scale public art. While closer to home, legendary contemporary artists Christo and Jean Claude captured the world’s imagination wrapping the cliffs of La Perouse with fabric, playing with the idea of art versus nature.

A nod to Christo and Jeanne Claude with a little something extra, the MCA artwork will transform a simple covering into something much more by incorporating elements of both Hewson and Gothe-Snape's individual styles in an intricate mix of text-based and graphic elements.

Hewson's installation-based work augments existing architectural structures with illusory and distorting effects, while Gothe-Snape's conceptual works focus on the human side of art - relationships between people, art and art-spaces. Together, their work will feature a massive typographical illusion that will transform during the five stages of the building’s cleaning process.

Playing with the uneven exterior of the museum, the work will use dimensional perspective and a clever play on words to create a poetic and intriguing artwork that will grow and shrink, and change in appearance and meaning as scaffolding is assembled and deconstructed.

“We want each individual member of the public to interact with the work differently,” says Gothe-Snape. “As each stage unfolds, the work intervenes on the site to create new meanings.”

Underneath this huge work of art, the MCA will continue to exhibit as normal with its impressive Winter Season featuring the Jeff Wall and Wangechi Mutu exhibitions. Opening hours remain the same and the exhibitions will be unaffected - the only difference is that patrons will now experience an additional exterior exhibition as part of their gallery visit.

Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority is proud to manage The Rocks: traditional land of the Cadigal people and the birthplace of European settlement in Australia. While preserving The Rocks’ unique heritage, the Authority produces large-scale and intimate quality events, outdoor markets, and educational tours. The Rocks: it’s a perfect blend of culture, cuisine and myriad experiences worth savouring.
