Kandooma Maldives Dives into Manta Month Celebration

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives will host a series of engaging activities for the inaugural 'Kandooma Manta Month' to raise awareness about manta ray conservation and offer guests unforgettable experiences in the pristine waters of the Maldives. Last year the Resort embarked on a week-long celebration which kicked off on World Manta Day and received overwhelmingly positive guest feedback resulting in the extension of the promotion to a month-long celebration starting 1 September 2024.

"We're excited to dedicate an entire month to celebrating manta rays. This initiative is not just about raising awareness—it's about giving our guests the chance to connect with nature, learn about conservation, and contribute to the preservation of one of the ocean's most majestic species." said Mark Eletr, General Manager, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.

"As an avid diver, I've had the privilege of encountering manta rays in their natural habitat, and it's truly a humbling experience. These creatures symbolize the beauty and mystery of the ocean, and it's our duty to ensure their survival for future generations. Through our Kandooma Manta Month activities, we aim to inspire our guests to join us in protecting these gentle giants." added Mark.

Just last year a group of guest divers accompanied by the General Manager, Mark, rescued a Giant Oceanic Manta Ray from ghost nets, who was later identified by The Manta Trust and added to their database.

“We were thrilled when The Manta Trust named the rescued Manta Ray 'Kandooma' in acknowledgement of the team who freed him and the waters where he was located.” said Mark.

Manta Rays (known as 'Madi' in Maldivian Dhivehi language) are the largest rays in the ocean and the Maldives is home to the world's largest population of reef manta rays, with over 5,831 individuals and counting. Our oceanic giant 'Kandooma' who was freed last year is the 915th Oceanic Manta Ray to be spotted in Maldivian waters as confirmed by The Manta Trust.

Key Highlights of Kandooma Manta Month include guided scuba dives and snorkelling excursions to observe these giants in their natural environment, learn about the threats they face as well as their behaviours through Marine Biology talks with guest and in-house experts.

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives has recently introduced a new jewellery line which centres on the beautiful Manta Ray. A contribution from each pendant sold will be donated to the 'Manta Trust' for their continuing and valuable research efforts.

A Kids' Marine Explorers Program will delight our younger guests, offering a fun and educational program where kids can learn about manta rays, participate in hands-on activities, and become certified "Kandoo Ambassadors".

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma is on the doorstep of some of the Maldives top ten dive sites and the wellbeing of the ocean and all the life within it, is important to guests and hotel staff alike. The resort aligns its efforts with IHG's purpose True Hospitality for Good, through their sustainability programme 'Journey to Tomorrow' which is the hotel group's response to helping achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Located in the South Male atoll just 40 mins from the airport by boat, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives is a beautiful island paradise. White sandy beaches, swaying coconut palms and turquoise waters form the backdrop for various leisure pursuits and some of the best diving in the Maldives. Guests can choose from Garden and Beach Villas, two-storey Beach Houses and the popular Overwater Villas. Families are well catered for with a choice of 2- and 3-bed villas, the Kandoo Kids' Club, and its complete activities programme. Six food and beverage outlets ensure healthy appetites are satisfied and the flavours of the Maldives are explored. For guests who want the ultimate relaxation, sun loungers and hammocks are around the island. The tranquil Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala offers escape for body and mind.

A hospitality veteran with life-long experience making guests feel welcome at hotels and resorts in Asia and Europe has been recognized as “Vietnam’s Best General Manager” in the prestigious “Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards Asia Pacific 2024”.

Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, Hong Kong & Macau readers deemed Herbert Laubichler-Pichler, who has been at the helm of 30-hectare resort Alma for five years and worked and lived in Vietnam since 2008, the country’s best general manager. He received the accolade last night at an awards ceremony in Bangkok.

“Austria-born Herbert Laubichler-Pichler is the hospitality life-timer at the helm of Cam Ranh’s Alma―a 384-suite resort with 14 food and drink outlets and 12 beachfront swimming pools. Zentis Osaka launches Art-in-Residence: itu’s Crossover – A Collaboration With Artist itu’

Zentis Osaka's 'Art-in-Residence: itu's Crossover' | The artist itu'
Paris-based Japanese artist itu’, who has garnered international recognition for his eccentric style, has brought his vision to Zentis Osaka with a captivating installation that has the design-forward hotel featuring works specially created by the artist for this pop-up not only throughout its public spaces, but also as part of a bold transformation of one of its Corner Studios.

Dubbing it ‘crossover’, itu’ took inspiration for the exhibition from his own experiences at the upscale, lifestyle hotel. “Zentis is a place where diverse people gather – regardless of nationality, generation or culture – and where each person's values transcend borders and naturally intermingle,” observed the artist.

“Similarly, with this installation, I’m endeavoring to eliminate the boundary between art and people by blurring the lines between the traditional perception of art – which is merely for viewing and appreciating from a distance – and everyday items,” said itu’. “While the work being viewed and the viewer are separate entities, naturally, the relationship between them changes depending on how they interact and the factors surrounding an interaction.”

Embodying that ‘crossover’ sentiment, itu’s creations for Zentis Osaka’s debut ‘Art-in-Residence’ program not only encompass over a dozen canvases on display throughout the hotel, but his free-spirited artistry has also been applied to non-traditional mediums such as glassware as well as the furnishings, curtains, bedding and other everyday items found in the singular Corner Studio room that’s been temporarily re-imagined into ‘itu’s Art Studio’.

Those who book a stay in ‘itu’s Art Studio’ will not only have the opportunity to enjoy the immersive art experience throughout the hotel and in their one-of-a-kind accommodation, but will also be able to take their in-room slippers – specially painted by the artist, with no two pairs alike – home as keepsakes.

In the public spaces, the boundaries between art and the hotel are stretched further with two staff sporting custom-painted uniforms by itu’, including stylish footwear – echoing the artistic sneakers and array of impressive collaborations that first drew attention to him.

At UPSTAIRZ Bar, award-winning head bartender Norihiko Furuse has concocted an original cocktail that’s as layered in flavors and aromas as itu’s distinctive style. The vodka-based drink opens with a subtle scent of cedar and notes of sweet white peach before an earthy aroma of sandalwood rounds out the sophisticated cocktail experience.

Born in Japan’s Aichi prefecture, itu’ taught himself to paint and, in 2014, opened his own atelier in the Marais district of Paris – his playful style and vivid palette unbound by conventional canvases from the start. Over the past decade, he’s held shows in France and Singapore, hosted pop-up exhibitions, produced murals and collaborated with well-known brands.

“Since we first arrived on Osaka’s hotel scene four years ago, we set out to be a cultural hub for art, music and craftsmanship,” explained Kiyotaka Saito, Zentis Osaka’s new general manager. “Through collaborations with artists like itu’ and other cultural pursuits – such as our ‘Salon de Zentis’ series, which is a collaboration with acclaimed music producer Naoki Tachikawa celebrating legendary musicians – we’re offering our guests new encounters that, hopefully, broaden their ideas and experiences of Japan.”

Zentis Osaka's 'Art-in-Residence: itu's Crossover'
'itu's Art Studio' | Guestroom by itu'
Appointed general manager ahead of the property’s fourth anniversary, Saito brings a breadth of experience, including nearly three decades with Palace Hotel Group – the company behind the Zentis brand – spent working across various hotel departments. The early part of his career included a year spent in London immersed in the inner workings of world-renowned properties such as The Savoy, Claridge’s, The Connaught and The Berkeley as part of Palace Hotel Group’s cross-training program. New to Osaka, the Tokyoite looks forward to getting acquainted with his new home city as it prepares to welcome travelers from all over the world for Expo 2025.

‘Zentis Art-in-Residence: itu’s Crossover’ is on now through September 30, 2024. Bookable through October 31, 2024 (subject to avaihotellability), a stay in ‘itu’s Art Studio’ starts from JPY45,000 per night, inclusive of taxes and service charge.

No. 1 Top Pizza Asia Pacific - the Pizza Bar on 38th, Set to Debut in Singapore With Limited-Time Pop-Up

The Pizza Bar on 38th
This October, Mandarin Oriental, Singapore will be hosting an epic pizza omakase pop-up featuring the award-winning pizzeria hailing from Japan, The Pizza Bar on 38th, ranked No. 1 in 50 Top Pizza Asia Pacific 2024 and No. 4 in 50 Top Pizza World 2023. Exclusively from 24 to 27 October and 29 to 31 October 2024, Italian-born executive chef Daniele Cason of The Pizza Bar on 38th in Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo will helm the 8-seat only chef's table at the hotel's all-day dining restaurant, embu, presenting his art of pizza in his masterfully crafted eight-course lunch and nine-course dinner degustation menus, served omakase-style.

"From Tokyo to Hong Kong to Abu Dhabi and now coming up in Singapore, I am thrilled to debut this exciting pop-up in Singapore, taking diners on a gastronomic journey of pizza alla pala, a unique Roman-style pizza, and served omakase-style which embraces a culinary philosophy I value which is serving the best to diners in the moment of time," says Chef Daniele.

Crafted with Italian organic flour with a perfect ratio of a gram of yeast to 80 per cent water and 48-hour fermentation, diners can look forward to classic and seasonal gourmet pizzas, perfected by Chef Daniele's dedication to pizza artistry, his craftmanship and handpicked ingredients. A mainstay on his menu, Bufala celebrates the essence of traditional flavours with buffalo mozzarella, San Marzano Solania tomatoes and basil. A double-baked creation, the Pizzino is one of chef's signature favourite, featuring a 'sandwich' style pizza with crisp on the outside, encasing a soft and fluffy layer of mascarpone and olives, and topped with the robust notes of fresh Alba white truffle shavings. The indulgent meal ensues with the Porcini, a refreshing yet creamy blend of fresh porcini mushroom and Fontina cheese, further accentuated with the rich sweetness of in season Kyoho grape and the delicate, earthy hint of marjoram. A sweet finale to the degustation menu, the Affogato & Velvet Di Saronno presents chef's innovative spin on the traditional Italian dessert, Affogato, ending the meal on a smooth, lingering finish with added fragrant touch of almond flavoured liqueur, Amaretto.

The Pizza Bar on 38th

Accor Strengthens Leadership in Australian Hotel Industry With Partnership Renewals for Over 40 Hotels

Soffitel Noosa Pacific Resort
Accor
, Australia's largest hotel operator, has signed partnership renewal agreements for more than 40 hotels, comprising 5,500 keys, across Australia, underscoring the Group's strong partnerships with some of the country's most influential hotel owners.

Accor Pacific partners have also invested more than $450 million in hotel renovations and refurbishments since the beginning of 2022.

Accor Pacific Chief Operating Officer PM&E, Adrian Williams, said: “This significant investment is a direct commitment to our brands. It is a clear and strong affirmation of our partners' confidence and trust in the quality and value of our brands.”

Marking its 40th renewal, Accor recently solidified its partnership with Silversea Investments through a long-term franchise agreement that will see significant investment to refurbish Novotel Sydney Parramatta and Mercure Sydney Parramatta, which will be rebranded to Novotel Sydney Rosehill upon completion of the renovation. Now managed by Trilogy Hotels, the importance of these hotels will grow even further as Parramatta's massive infrastructure development continues and the new Western Sydney Airport launches in 2026.

The Sunshine Coast's premier five-star hotel, Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort, also recently extended their partnership with Accor for this flagship Sofitel. The resort will soon announce its renovation plans to enhance further its luxury positioning on Noosa's prestigious Hasting Street.

Accor Pacific Chief Operating Officer PM&E, Adrian Williams, said Accor's network of more than 350 hotels in Australia had been built on the strength of the Group's well-established relationships with international and local hotel owners.

“Accor has been operating in Australia for over 30 years now, and a feature of our outstanding relationships with owners is our commitment to ensure their hotels remain at the forefront of the market through elevated guest services, facilities and satisfaction.

Novotel Sydney Parramatta
“We are privileged to have many long-term owner relationships, and our team is continually working with their hotels to ensure they deliver above-market performance. While owners may initially be attracted to Accor because of the strength of our global brands, loyalty and distribution channels, the level of local on-the-ground support has been an equally powerful incentive for owners to renew partnership agreements with us.

“We recently invested in providing even more operational support for our hotels, growing the number of operational leaders based in key cities across the Pacific region so that decisions can be made more quickly and resources allocated to where they are most needed.

“We've developed the largest hotel management platform in the Pacific with more than 300 above property team members to help support and drive performance for over 200 managed hotels. We are the only operator to have dedicated operational teams with heads of operations based in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Launceston, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Auckland and Fiji.”

Accor Pacific Chief Development Officer, Lindsay Leeser, said: “Separate to our managed network, we have developed the largest dedicated hotel franchise platform, with the largest franchise support team in the market, allowing us to work with franchise owners or third-party operators in a way that suits their business and investment strategies. We have over 30 years of franchising experience, and that really counts for owners operating in such a highly competitive market.”

Strengthening Thailand's forest protection with innovative fiscal policies

Thailand Forrest
With 124.375 million rai of lush forests hanging in the balance, Thailand faces a critical decision. Within these emerald realms reside myriad species and essential ecosystems, yet they confront escalating challenges, including deforestation.

According to data on annual tree cover loss by Global Forest Watch, urbanization and commodity-driven deforestation are among the drivers of permanent deforestation in Thailand. In 2021 alone, the country lost 68,750 rai due to urbanization and 5.406 million rai to commodity-driven deforestation.

To prevent that from happening further, Thailand’s Royal Forest Department has taken significant steps to emphasize forest restoration. Through legislation and action, the government aims to reserve existing forest land for conservation while promoting tree plantations to contribute to overall forest cover. The focus is on sustainable management and balancing economic development with environmental preservation.

Thailand’s strength lies in unity. Community participation and ecotourism play essential roles in sustainable forest conservation. By engaging local communities, Thailand can create economic incentives for protecting natural environments. Visitors learn about the importance of conservation efforts, fostering a sense of responsibility.

Additionally, Thailand has explored environmental commodity taxation to encourage forest conservation and land use change. Ecological fiscal transfers allocate funds to local governments based on forest preservation efforts, rewarding local communities for their conservation actions and promoting sustainable practices.

The action in Thailand has shown how the government played a vital role in providing a fiscal mechanism. Across the ocean, Indonesia, with its diverse ecosystems, is facing similar challenges, which led to cross-sectoral and public-private collaboration for sustainable land use practices, particularly in forest-rich areas like Jambi Province in Sumatra.

Public-Private Collaboration in Providing Fiscal Incentives

Komunitas Konservasi Indonesia Warsi (KKI-Warsi), a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation, focuses on education, advocacy, and land restoration and has conducted activities with the community to restore and conserve peatlands.

This includes sustainable coffee cultivation, eco-fishery, peatland edu-eco-tourism, and the Pohon Asuh (foster tree) initiative. Warsi also uses these initiatives to provide an additional livelihood to the community while promoting sustainable land use. On the other hand, the activities done by

Warsi are often used as proof points on the impact of restoration efforts to curb carbon emissions and, therefore, should be supported.

Warsi, alongside the Indonesian government and the local community, has also initiated an edu-eco-tourism project in the peat forest of Pematang Rahim village by rebuilding infrastructure such as trekking paths, gates, and gazebos. In collaboration with the community, Warsi is working to revive ecotourism, which suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With financial support from various organizations, including the local and national governments, Warsi is enhancing the visitor experience and providing education about the peat ecosystem. Additionally, this initiative emphasizes the importance of forest management in preventing fires, particularly during the dry season, and highlights the community's crucial role in protecting the forest from external threats.

In addition to large-scale projects like eco-tourism, Warsi invites public participation through its Pohon Asuh (Foster Tree) program. This crowdfunding initiative allows individuals to contribute Rp200,000 (USD12.5) annually to adopt a tree with a diameter of 60cm or more.

Managed by local communities, the program ensures tree growth and prevents illegal logging through forest patrols, bolstering the local economy and encouraging community forest stewardship.

Apart from ecotourism, Warsi along with the community in degraded peatland areas are cultivating liberica coffee. The activities have provided a sustainable farming alternative to Indonesia's fragile peatlands.

The yield of coffee beans can be enhanced by adding lime or manure, directly increasing farmers' income. To reduce emissions further Warsi and the community also using the coffee cherry residue as compost, ensuring soil fertility and supporting sustainable farming. This approach not only preserves the delicate peatland ecosystem but also boosts the economic well-being of local communities.

Looking ahead, Thailand's innovative approach to forest conservation, combining fiscal responsibility with community engagement, offers valuable lessons for the entire region. While Indonesia faces similar challenges, its unique approach to fostering public-private partnerships, exemplified by KKI Warsi's work, demonstrates the power of collaboration in achieving sustainable land management.

By learning from each other and implementing a combination of financial incentives and community-driven initiatives, ASEAN countries can effectively combat deforestation and create a more sustainable future.
