Organised by the Chinatown Business Association in collaboration with programme partners, the festival will take place at various locations in Chinatown where the streets come alive with the hustle and bustle of Chinatown in the 1900s.

The Five Footways in Singapore is an integral part of everyday life of the community. In collaboration with Sun Yat-Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and students from Hwa Chong Institution, we embark on a journey into the history of the Five Footway, clans and associations, as well as related stories for Chinatown Singapore to create this unique exhibition for the festival. Gain a deeper understanding on the way of life, values, and traditions of our forefathers in Singapore’s Chinatown, and how the lives of early immigrants were centred at the Five Footway across trades, clan activities, cultural, arts and entertainment activities and beyond.

Visitors to the festival can also register for Conserved Buildings in Chinatown, a walking trail by Do It SG to learn about the conservation of heritage buildings in Singapore, the history behind some of the oldest buildings in Chinatown and the activities that used to line the Five Footways. Revel in intricate stories of folktales at Joss Stick Storytelling and do not miss Tan Ah Huat in Chinatown, a theatrical walking tour by Let’s Go Tour that transports you back in time through the eyes of Tan Ah Huat, a Chinese immigrant from the 1920s as he shares the fascinating tale of Chinatown back in the early days of Singapore.

Paying homage to its previous name Theatre Street or Hei Yuen Kai, Smith Street is set to enthral visitors to the Five Footway Festival with rich, cultural theatre acts across Cantonese opera, Teochew opera and Peking opera performances as well as the Hokkien puppet show. The festival will provide visitors with opportunities to pick up some of these traditional skills through various workshops and classes. Visitors can sign up for Colourful Dialects to create their own personalised idiom and slangs colouring book, while learning their meanings and how to use them. Alternatively, Ping Sheh’s Introduction to Peking Opera class and Yan Wong Cultural Troupe’s Kirin Workshop offer participants a fun and inclusive time to experience their music, movements and more.

Handwritten Collection Celebrates Its First Anniversary With a Dozen Fascinating and Heart-Warming Hotels

Hotel Morris Sydney
Handwritten Collection, a midscale collection brand of Accor, celebrates its first anniversary in January 2024, with a burgeoning roster of charming and diverse hotels around the world. The brand first launched in January 2023, with the purpose of bringing together small to mid-size hotels that authentically reflect the character and warmth of the people who love and look after them. Since then, Handwritten Collection has opened 12 curated hotels in the space of just 12 months. With around 25 hotels in the pipeline to open in 2024 and beyond and over 150 projects and leads under active investigation, Handwritten Collection is becoming one of the fastest-growing midscale collection brands in the world.

“Much like a handwritten note, the signature style of each host at a Handwritten Collection hotel is what guests remember and what really sets the brand apart,” said James Wheatcroft, Global SVP Midscale Brands, Accor. “This resonates strongly with travelers who are eager to experience their destinations more fully. Handwritten Collection taps into a growing desire for unique hotels with charm and personality, while delivering the assurance of Accor's high standards of hospitality and globally renowned membership benefits.”

The hoteliers, or hosts, of the Handwritten Collection are passionate people who welcome guests into their world. The personal touches that each host shares with guests reflect their tastes, interests, and little quirks of their personalities. Guests discover these touchpoints at various moments throughout their stay. A culinary specialty, a unique cocktail, a design motif, or the welcome of a friendly pet – these are just a few of the ways Handwritten Collection hotels express the personal traits and passions of their hosts.

“We designed Handwritten Collection to support the growing number of independent hotels in the midscale segment who are keen to leverage the powerful benefits of a leading global hotel group, while retaining the unique character they have curated”, said Camil Yazbeck, Global Chief Development Officer, Premium, Midscale & Economy, Accor. “We are very pleased with the extremely positive response to Handwritten Collection from owners and partners in our first year, and we look forward to exploring many more new opportunities for Handwritten Collection across global markets, with high expectations for a fresh round of hotel signings in 2024.”

Collection brand hotels are proliferating around the world at a rate of 25% a year, with one of the highest growth rates in the industry today. The data supports the ambitious growth plan of Handwritten Collection.

Handwritten Collection - The current portfolio

1) Close to Sheshan National Park, Hotel Shanghai Sheshan Oriental – Handwritten Collection (China) reflects its host's passion for seas and oceans around the globe. Built in the Mediterranean style and boasting a large tropical landscape, the hotel is surrounded by a 4,400 sqm outdoor beach and swimming pool, including a kid's pool to satisfy all age needs to get immersed in the seaside vibe. In the Social Hub, guests will soon find books about the seas and oceans. This collection will be curated for all ages, from art to children's books, and novels to comics. Finally, the host's passion will also be present at the bar with a Signature cocktail - The Seawater Martini, a salty alternative to the traditional dirty martini.

2) At The Hotel Faber Park Singapore – Handwritten Collection (Singapore), guests experience the elegance and history of a bygone era. Through its architecture and design, the hotel tells the story of Mount Faber Park, one of the oldest parks in Singapore. In 1845, the park's namesake, Captain Charles Edward Faber of the Madras Engineers, built a winding road to the summit to install a signal station. The hotel's design and layout are inspired by Captain Faber's intrepid path through the rolling foothills. Surrounded by lush green parkland and featuring spectacular vistas of the city and harbor, guests will feel at ease among the sense of history and devotion to nature at this special place.

3) Designed as a chic and arty holiday home, Saint Gervais Hotel & Spa – Handwritten Collection (France) feels like a getaway to Turkey, thanks to the host's passion for Ottoman culture. Guests arrive to the sound of oriental music and a welcome ritual with Turkish eau de cologne. Spa treatments are infused with rosewater and orange blossom extracts, while a library corner in the lobby offers books for a deep dive in Turkish history. Fresh daily breakfasts are prepared with some of the owner's favorite ingredients, such as börek, feta, olives, parsley and tomatoes. Turkish coffee and tea are available throughout the day, with Turkish inspired cocktails in the evening, made with raki liquor and pomegranate syrup.

4) Residing within a historic Italian Renaissance styled building, Hotel Morris Sydney – Handwritten Collection (Australia) is a rare example of the renowned Inter-War Palazzo style by architect, Virgil Dante Cizzio. The hotel has found new life as a boutique hotel with an evocative bar - poised like dusk, between old and new, light and dark, Italian design and Australian influence. Each venue represents a distinct but interlinked story and to move between the bar and hotel is to experience a transition in mood and design. Touchpoints of the host's penchant for Italian culture include a refreshing Italian drink on arrival; a 'Bar Morris bill ritual' of dice for a chance at a complimentary Amaro nightcap; and a deck of 'scopa' playing cards placed in-room.

5) The hosts of Andaman Beach Hotel Phuket - Handwritten Collection (Thailand) strive to create moments of connection for guests through a passion for world travel. Guests are offered welcome drinks and sweets inspired by either Phuket or the different destinations that hotel team members have explored. Guests are also invited to enjoy a reading corner in the lobby at their leisure, where they will find a series of travel books with bookmarks recounting the host's own travel experiences. Each guestroom is uniquely designed, although they all feature a thoughtfully placed local guidebook, curated by the host, with recommendations for special encounters with local artisans throughout Phuket.

6) Splendid Hotel Lac d'Annecy – Handwritten Collection (France) celebrates its host's passion for Art Deco design. The hotel is the work of renowned designer Thierry D'Istria, who introduced a series of Art Deco motifs to the hotel's architecture and interiors, then layered in elements of 1950s modernity. A carefully curated selection of Art Deco pieces, artwork, sculptures and vintage pieces add a touch of whimsy to the guest experience, while the hotel's restaurant is done up in true Art Deco style. At the bar, guests are invited to choose from a list of both creative and classic cocktails, including the host's favorite, the Cosmopolitan.

7) At the coastal Relais San Martino Salento – Handwritten Collection (Italy), the owner's fascination with the sea is a recurring motif throughout the hotel. From the glittering glass spheres in the hotel's décor, to marine-based wellness treatments, seawater guestroom amenities, sea inspired cocktails and a restaurant menu designed around seawater – guests will feel immersed in the beachy, oceanic vibe. Once they are fully inspired to go for a dip, guests are invited to go wild swimming at the nearby beach, or enjoy the enchanting wellness area, featuring an outdoor pool, whirlpool, fitness boutique, and a meditation citrus grove.

8) At Oru Hub Hotel Tallinn – Handwritten Collection Tallinn (Estonia) the hotelier shares a passion for traveling from the moment guests arrive, with the feel of stepping into a photo collage. Estonian design agency Velvet and the interior architecture studio Aeris created an award-winning design for the hotel, with a balance of relaxing and social spaces, including a workshop and a yoga room. Images from the host's favorite travel moments feature throughout the hotel. These photos are also used to create postcards which guests can mail to friends from the hotel mailbox, and are bound as a photobook that includes anecdotes from the host's travels.

9) The Crown Kraków – Handwritten Collection (Poland) is a historic site that has been revived by hoteliers with a passion for Polish art and a vision to marry the artistic and utilitarian ambitions of the Art Deco movement with the comforts of modern hospitality. The hotel is decorated with the works of the hosts' favorite contemporary artists: painter Jacek Hazuka and sculptor Adam Myjak. Postcards and a monograph of their works are available to guests. Social events are often held with Polish artists in the bar – best enjoyed while sipping the hotel's signature Belvedere vodka cocktail, a vibrant concoction inspired by the colorful work of artist Leon Tarasiewicz.

Womil Hotel Perth
10) Wonil Hotel Perth - Handwritten Collection
(Australia) is a beautifully designed and picturesque hotel that radiates a sophisticated allure through its carefully curated interiors. The host, a director of the Forrest Research Foundation, shares his passion for knowledge and higher learning throughout the hotel. The welcome letter to guests sets the tone, detailing fun facts about research projects happening in the area. With a focus on conservation and environmentally sustainable design, the hotel is named after the wonil - the Noongar name for 'peppermint tree', which grows on the riverbank where the hotel resides. Peppermint-infused cookies in each guestroom create a delightful association and sensory experience of the region.

11) Fans of the 1970s-1980s Manchester music scene will find their vibe at Les Capitouls Toulouse Centre – Handwritten Collection (France). The pink brick townhouse features an inviting English-inspired decor and a steady stream of British New Wave. Guests are invited to enjoy English beers or cocktails under the glass roof of the Wilson bar, surrounded by posters, audio cassettes and memorabilia depicting the legendary era of Hacienda and Factory Records. Guestrooms feature record players and vinyl records for an authentic listening experience of the music that shaped a generation. Breakfast is also a hit at this comfy spot, with homemade dishes and a special « after concert » energizing shot.

12) Number 11, St. Julian's Malta – Handwritten Collection (Malta) is a civilized, adults-only hotel where guests embark on a sensory journey, inspired by the host's passion for the Mediterranean islands. Guests are greeted with a refreshing and herbaceous alcohol-free cocktail upon arrival, ideally enjoyed at the hotel's rooftop lounge and pool while gazing across the sea. Breakfast includes a selection of Mediterranean specialties, while local favorite, Hammett's Mestizo, serves up delicious shareable plates throughout the day and evening. The hotel is perfectly located in a fashionable district, surrounded by vibrant clubs, fabulous shopping, and a cosmopolitan experience of this unique Mediterranean region.

The Amazing Thailand Stand opened today in a ceremony officiated by H.E. Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Minister of Tourism and Sports together with H.E. Ms. Pattarat Hongtong, Ambassador of Thailand to India, and Mr. Chote Trachu, TAT Chairman of the Board of Directors.

ATM 2024 to focus on India’s outbound tourism potential, over 30% of Indian travellers choose to visit Middle East destinations

With the Indian outbound market forecast to be worth $143.5 billion annually by the end of this decade, the Indian tourism sector will come under the spotlight during Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024, which returns to the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) for its 31st edition from 6-9 May.

According to a report by booking.com and McKinsey, 70% of Indians travelling overseas choose nearby destinations, with one-third choosing destinations in the Middle East. The UAE is the top regional destination, followed by Saudi Arabia. According to the DET, India is Dubai’s top source market, with 1.9 million visitors in the first 10 months of 2023. Saudi Arabia is aiming for 7.5 million visitors by 2030.

To illustrate the sheer size and potential growth of India’s overall outbound market, prior to the pandemic in 2019, Indians made 26.9 million overseas trips; the report predicts that by 2030, that number could increase to 50 million departures.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “The boom in outbound travel from India is being driven primarily by the growing middle class. In 2020, only 37 million households had annual income between $10,000 and up to $35,000, but due to India’s rapid economic growth, by 2030 that number will rise significantly to 177 million households.

“More specifically, households earning over $35,000 per annum will also increase from two million in 2020 to 13 million by 2030, a sixfold increase!

“And with India’s median age being just 28 years, it’s little wonder that the UNWTO recognises India as one of the top three fastest-growing outbound markets in the world. By 2030, India’s total travel expenditure will be valued at $410 billion.

“Putting that into perspective, prior to Covid, in 2019, it was worth just $150 billion, an increase of 173%.”

Furthermore, it is not just the volume of Indian travellers that is getting Middle East destinations excited. According to a survey by Acko Insurance, the majority of Indian travellers who responded were willing to spend up to $7,000 on international trips.

Another reason already alluded to is the close proximity of the Gulf states, Dubai is the most popular city destination for Indian travellers, just three hours flight time from Mumbai. In addition, increased connectivity and affordable air travel from tier-two cities are also driving demand, particularly direct flights with low-cost carriers.

“And with over 8.5 million Indian expatriates currently working in the GCC, business travel and bleisure, will undoubtedly underpin this growth,” added Curtis.

ATM 2024 is expecting a record number of travel professionals representing outbound as well as inbound travel to India. Delegates, exhibitors and attendees will be given ample opportunity to network and make new and business contacts as well as the opportunity to explore the Indian travel sector through various show features, including a dedicated India Summit, which will look deeper into this vibrant market.

ATM 2024 will feature a dedicated India summit entitled, ‘Unlocking the True Potential of Inbound Indian Travellers, ’ which will take place at ATM’s Global Stage on Day 1 of the show, Monday 6th May, from 14:45 to 15:25 in conjunction with VIDEC Consultants Private Limited. The Summit will explore the dynamics of India as a key source market for tourism growth, as well as current and future opportunities.

Last year’s ATM hosted several high-profile exhibitors from India, including Air India, who exhibited for the first time, the Goa Department of Tourism, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, Uttar Pradesh Tourism, Karnataka Department of Tourism, Odisha Tourism and Puducherry Tourism. This year, with an anticipated 20% increase in exhibitors from India expected, TBO.com, Taj Hotels, Rezlive, and Rategain have already confirmed. New exhibitors to feature in the 2024 edition of the show include Verteil Technologies, Tulah Clinical Wellness, ZentrumHub and The Paul Resorts & Hotels.

In line with its theme, ‘Empowering Innovation: Transforming Travel Through Entrepreneurship’, the 31st edition of ATM will once again host a range of stakeholders from across the Middle East and beyond.

Held in conjunction with Dubai World Trade Centre, ATM 2024’s strategic partners include Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), Destination Partner; Emirates, Official Airline Partner; IHG Hotels & Resorts, Official Hotel Partner; Al Rais Travel, Official DMC Partner and Rotana Hotels & Resorts, Registration Sponsor.

Amazing Thailand Media Briefing highlights Thailand’s latest tourism offerings at SATTE 2024

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) shines spotlight on Thailand’s diverse tourism offerings towards sustainability at the Amazing Thailand Media Briefing as part of its 15th participation in the South Asia’s Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) 2024.

Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Minister of Tourism and Sports, said “I am determined to elevate Thailand to be a quality and safe destination that delivers a valuable experience to our visitors from India through Thailand’s Soft Powers and promotes Thailand to be an all-year-round destination.”

India is one of Thailand’s most important visitor markets. Last year, the number of Indian travellers totalled 1.62 million, making it the fourth largest market. Revenue generated from Indian travellers’ spending amounted to over 63 billion Baht in 2023. This year, as of 19 February, India ranked fifth with 262,986 arrivals.

To inspire Indian travellers to visit Thailand, the Thai government waives tourist visas for Indian citizens, effective from 10 November, last year, to 10 May, this year, and is also working to boost connectivity between the two countries.

For this year, TAT has set a target of 80 billion Baht in revenue from about 1.74 million Indian travellers to Thailand.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said “Key strategies to realise our targets will be subsidy schemes for incentive, wedding, and celebration groups. Joint promotions with airlines and travel agents will be offered for repeat visitors and golfers. Just as importantly, we will continue to strengthen our presence through India’s leading shows including the Outbound Travel Mart in Mumbai, and this SATTE in New Delhi.”

TAT’s marketing activities will aim at current segments, including family, millennials, wedding and celebrations, golfers, luxury, and incentive group. Specific initiatives will be introduced for new segments, such as, senior citizens, women travellers, rejuvenating tours, and adventure sports. The Gen Z and LGBTQIA+ are also earmarked as potentials segments.

Aside from well-established destinations like Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, TAT is promoting Hua Hin, a family, golf and wellness destination; Kanchanaburi for its abundant natural and historical attractions, and Khao Yai, which is known for its national park, wineries, and many family and sport activities.

In terms of new tourism offering, TAT has listed EmSphere shopping mall, Thai Bus Food Tour and Pruek dining cruise in Bangkok; three UNESCO sites in Nakhon Ratchasima; and Andamanda Phuket waterpark and Carnival Magic theme park in Phuket.

For Health and Wellness enthusiasts, the choices are RVX Sampran in Nakhon Pathom, Thann Wellness in Ayutthaya, and La Vita Sana in Khao Lak, Phang-nga. Meanwhile, Cape Fahn in Samui, Four Seasons in Bangkok, Banyan Tree in Krabi, Anantara Koh Yao Yai present most-recent options for weddings and celebrations.

To facilitate air travellers, the Airports of Thailand (AOT) has increased the annual passenger handling capacity at Suvarnabhumi Airport to 60 million from 45 million with the September-2023 opening of the Midfield Satellite Building (SAT-1). Also last year, Chiang Mai International Airport has been operational 24/7 since November. In addition, AOT plans to expand Phuket International Airport, while conducting a feasibility study on a new airport in Phang-nga.

Interprovincial travel is set to be more convenient with two new motorway projects – the M6 motorway, connecting to Nakhon Ratchasima, and the M81 motorway, connecting to Kanchanaburi – slated to be ready for public use in 2025.

“TAT’s activity in India aligns with our “PASS strategy” to drive Thailand’s tourism towards High-Value and Sustainability. This encompasses ‘Partnership 360’ efforts, digital transformation, subculture movement, and sustainable practices,” Ms. Thapanee said.

From 1 January – 19 February 2024, Thailand recorded 5.32 million foreign arrivals, generating over 254 billion Baht. The top five markets were China, Malaysia, Russia, South Korea, and India. For the entire year, TAT has set an overall revenue target of 3 trillion Baht, comprising 1.92 trillion Baht from international tourism and 1.08 trillion Baht from domestic tourism.

"A show of this scale would not be possible without our fantastic venue partner, and we thank MCEC for their support," Silke said.

Vietjet and Airbus announce the order for 20 widebody A330neo at Singapore Airshow

Vietjet and Airbus signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the order of 20 A330neo (A330-900) widebodies.

The new order marks one of the largest deals at the ongoing Singapore Airshow 2024 and Vietjet’s largest widebody purchase so far. The aircraft will be operated on the carrier’s growing long range network, as well as on high capacity regional services. They will replace the carrier’s current fleet of leased A330-300s, as well as enable network expansion.

Vietjet has been rapidly expanding, with one of its most notable expansions taking place in Australia in 2023. It entered the market in April of that year with its Sydney and Melbourne routes, and by the end of the year, it had added three more routes – Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth – with a total of 58 flights per week.

“We are excited to work with Vietjet on the next phase of the carrier's expansion,” said Christian Scherer, CEO of the Commercial Aircraft Business of Airbus. “The A330neo will enable the airline to achieve the lowest possible operating costs per seat and to continue to offer its customers the best possible value wherever they fly. It will also be the perfect complement to the A321XLRs already on order with the airline, as it spreads its wings to more far-flung destinations.”

Vietjet Chief Executive Officer Dinh Viet Phuong said: "The new A330neo aircraft is a strategic addition to comprehensively modernize Vietjet's fleet, enhancing operational capabilities to support our global flight network expansion plan. Its fuel-efficient new-generation design aligns with our sustainable development strategy and ESG goals, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050. With the introduction of the A330neo, passengers can look forward to longer-range, well-equipped flights with excellent services at more competitive fares."

The A330neo features the award-winning Airspace cabin, which offers passengers a unique passenger experience, high level of comfort, ambience, and design. This includes more individual space, enlarged overhead bins, a new lighting system and access to the latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems.

Powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330-900 is capable of flying 7,200 nm/13,300 km non-stop. At the end of January 2024, the A330 Family had accumulated 1,771 firm orders from more than 130 customers worldwide.

With a fleet of over 105 aircraft and constantly growing passenger volume, Vietjet is actively expanding its intercontinental flight network, developing new and modern fleets in collaboration with global strategic partners such as Airbus.

Thailand allocates 50 million Baht in medical aid to assist foreign tourists in case of accidents

The Ministry of Tourism and Sport (MOTS), in collaboration with the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (NIEM) under the Ministry of Public Health, has announced the 50-million-Baht medical funding to assist foreign tourists in case of accidents while travelling in Thailand.

Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Minister of Tourism and Sports, said “The Prime Minister and Finance Minister, H.E. Mr. Srettha Thavisin, has approved the compensation payments for tourists in the case of accidents or loss. Thus, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has initiated the “Assistance

Scheme for Foreign Tourist Injury and Casualty” as part of our ongoing efforts to assure tourist safety and boost tourist confidence in Thailand.”

The 50 million Baht will be used to provide relief to foreign tourists on a case-by-case basis in the event of accidents, crimes, and other unfortunate events or disasters. But it must not be caused by tourists’ carelessness, intention to commit illegal acts or have circumstances that risk causing the incident.

Foreign tourists are eligible for coverage if they have valid passports and must be visiting Thailand between 1 January – 31 August 2024 with a tourist visa or for the purpose of tourism only.

The compensation rate in the case of death is up to 1 million Baht. In the case of permanent organ loss, loss of sight, or permanent disability, a payment of 300,000 Baht will be given. In the case of accident injuries, actual medical expenses will not exceed 500,000 Baht.

The MOTS has initiated the “Thailand Traveller Safety” (TTS) system via https://www.tts.go.th/where foreign tourists can register online for the protection and coverage. It is important to note that the scheme is available only for foreign tourists who have valid ‘non-work’ passports and a tourist visa. Citizens of countries and territories who may enter Thailand under the Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme must visit Thailand for tourism purposes only.

“As well as the MOTS, the TTS system can also be accessed by the Tourist Police and the NIEM for initial screening of tourists whether they are eligible to apply for relief. Data collection is done discreetly under Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act,” Mr. Mongkon Wimonrat, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the MOTS, said.

Meanwhile, the NIEM has proposed the establishment of a Tourist Emergency Medical Assistance Centre (TEMAC). In case of accident or health emergency involving foreign tourists, the TEMAC can coordinate with the MOTS’s Tourist Assistance Center (TAC) or the Tourist Police Hotline 1155 or the NIEM Hotline 1669 to verify whether the tourists are eligible for compensation under the scheme and refer them to hospital for medical treatments.

Flt. Lt. Dr. Atchariya Pangma, Secretary-General of NIEM, said “By pooling our resources together to ensure tourists receive emergency medical services in time will help boost confidence among tourists regarding Thailand’s safety standards. The cooperation will also promote the efficiency and quality of our emergency medical systems for the maximum benefit of tourists.”

Meanwhile, the Tourist Police is operating the existing Command and Control Operation Centre (CCOC) and the Strong Tourism Community (STC) initiatives under the guidelines for implementing the Smart Safety Zone project and applying technology to maintain tourist safety.

“The Tourist Police is committed to helping create peace of mind for foreign tourists regarding safety. These include emphasising strict law enforcement, suppressing exploitation of tourists and solving the problem of fraud to boost tourist confidence in Thailand,” Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Pheuk-um, Commissioner of the Tourist Police, said.

To apply for the “Assistance Scheme for Foreign Tourist Injury and Casualty” project, tourists can submit their applications at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Provincial Tourism and Sports Office (nationwide), or the Tourist Assistance Centre at Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang International Airport (24/7), or via email: touristcompensation@mots.go.th, or by sending by post to Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Landmark architecture in Hong Kong

Located in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District on the Victoria Harbour waterfront, M+ is Asia’s first global contemporary art museum of visual culture. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with TFP Farrells and Arup, the building is composed of a podium and a slender tower that fuse into the shape of an upside-down ‘T’. The expansive podium cantilevers above ground and includes 17,000 sqm of exhibition space across 33 galleries, 3 cinema houses, the Mediatheque, Learning Hub, and Roof Garden that faces Victoria Harbour.

3 exhibitions you can't miss this February

Australia’s best beach activities (and where to do them)

Image: Tourism and Events Queensland

Home to more than 10,000 beaches, heading to the coast for a swim or surf is etched into Australia’s national identity. Beyond taking a dip (in the protected area between the red-and-yellow flags, of course), here are some of the other experiences and activities to enjoy at the beach during your visit down under.

Surfing

Surf culture is alive and well at beaches all over Australia, so you’ll see people catching waves from Bondi to Newcastle, Perth, Byron Bay and beyond.

As its name suggests, Surfers Paradise is a top place to hang ten in Queensland, as is the Noosa World Surfing Reserve where you’ll find world-class point breaks suited to both experienced and novice surfers. Want to surf while you’re in Sydney? Head to Manly, Bondi, Cronulla, Freshwater, Maroubra or Narrabeen. Down south in Victoria, the world’s best surfers carve up the powerful waves at Bells Beach during the annual Rip Curl Pro but if you’re not a confident surfer try the tamer swell at Torquay or Apollo Bay instead. In Western Australia, the Margaret River region reigns supreme when it comes to surf breaks, but there are surfable beaches in and around Fremantle, Kalbarri, Denmark, Esperance, Perth and Albany too.

Standup paddle boarding

Standup paddle boarding (or SUP, for short) has taken off in the last few years. While this pastime is popular all over Australia, there’s a few key destinations that are well-suited for a paddle.

If you find yourself in Byron Bay, Wategos Beach’s sheltered waters make it an ideal SUP spot. In Sydney, you can hire a board and sign up for lessons at Pittwater, Cronulla, Balmoral Beach and Avalon Beach. In Melbourne, St Kilda Beach or Mornington/Mount Martha are your places for SUP lessons and board hire, while the incredibly beautiful, protected beaches and bays of Tasmania’s photogenic Freycinet area are the perfect backdrop for a spot of paddle boarding. As expected, Perth has a bounty of beaches suitable for SUP adventures, with the calmer waters of South Beach ideal for beginners and Cottesloe Beach having something for paddleboard enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Beach volleyball

When travelling in Australia you’ll see people playing all sorts of games at the beach – from frisbee to beach cricket. You might also see locals serving, blocking and spiking on the sand during hotly contested games of beach volleyball.

Want to get in on the action? With plenty of soft sand and lots of year-round sunshine, the Gold Coast has a strong beach volleyball scene. In Sydney, Manly Beach has beach volleyball courts that you can use for free all year round – just BYO ball. If you’re in Perth, head to Scarborough Beach or City Beach where several volleyball courts can be booked for public use, and in Adelaide, Glenelg Beach has regular social beach volleyball sessions.

Snorkelling

Think you need to head out on a boat to experience sensational snorkelling? Think again, because there’s plenty of marine life to discover just metres from the shoreline.

Tucked around the corner from Sydney’s Clovelly Beach, you won’t want to miss exploring the clear, blue waters of Gordons Bay Underwater Nature Trail. If you’re lucky you might encounter one of the beloved blue groupers that frequent this marine sanctuary. In Western Australia, Rottnest Island and Exmouth have great beach snorkelling spots, while swimming out to check out Coogee Beach’s Omeo Wreck off the coast of Perth is an unforgettable experience. In Adelaide, you’ll be able to spot sea urchins, blue swimmer crabs and sea stars while snorkelling at Hallett Cove Beach and in Queensland, Amity Point is a serene spot on North Stradbroke Island.

Beach barbecuing

A beach swim is guaranteed to stoke your hunger, so it’s fortunate that free public gas barbecues run by the local council face many of Australia’s beaches. The art of the beach barbecue is pretty simple. Just buy some meat, fish or tofu to put on the barbie, add salads, bread rolls and a few cool drinks and sit back and soak up the Aussie beach atmosphere. If you’re planning to aim for the weekend or a public holiday, get there early to stake your claim on a picnic table and barbecue. Don’t forget to clean the hot plate and remove your rubbish before you leave (Australians take barbecue etiquette pretty seriously).

Kitesurfing

Nothing beats the thrill of getting some serious air while you’re at the beach. If you haven’t tried kitesurfing before, make Australia the place you give it a go.

Your best bet for taking kitesurfing lessons is at aquatic water sports hubs like Cairns, Margaret River and the Gold Coast. Sydney’s blustery Botany Bay is well-known for having consistently favourable winds for kite surfing, so it’s no surprise that kite surfing schools operate in this area. It’s not an easy sport to master, but learning the ropes is a memorable way to immerse yourself in Australia’s beach scene and come home with a new skill at the same time.

Sandboarding

A rare beach activity you don’t need to wear a bikini, wetsuit or boardshorts for, sandboarding is a fun experience worthwhile seeking out.

If you’re doing a road trip along the south coast of New South Wales, book a sandboarding session in the beachside holiday town of Port Stephens. In Western Australia, if you’ve booked a stay at Lancelin Lodge (or are happy to drive up from Perth), then sandboarding is an activity you won’t want to miss. Rent a sandboard for a few hours of fun gliding down the steep dunes that make Lancelin Australia's premier sandboarding destination. As these dunes are inland, this technically isn’t quite a beach activity, but there’s so much sand you’ll feel like you’re at the beach anyway!

Taking three for the sea

One impactful but dead-easy activity you can do at any beach in Australia (or the world) is what’s known as ‘taking three for the sea’. The brainchild of an Australian not-for-profit, Take 3 for the Seaencourages beachgoers to collect and dispose of just three pieces of rubbish while you’re at the beach. Apart from detracting from the beauty of the coast, ocean plastics cause major problems for turtles, dolphins, whales, seabirds and other marine life. So if you’re enjoying an Australian beach break, don’t forget to take a minute or two to give a little back and take three (or more) for the sea.

TAT reaffirms support for WWF Thailand to urge tourists to “Travel Ivory Free”

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has reaffirmed the continuous support for the World Wide Fund for Nature International or WWF Thailand’s ‘Travel Ivory Free’ campaign to urge tourists to travel responsibly and stop buying ivory products.

At WWF Thailand’s latest campaign launch to announce its ongoing efforts to change tourists’ buying behaviour and put an end to illegal ivory trade, key players in the travel and tourism industry as well as international organisations joined together to show their commitment to help spread the awareness and promote a more sustainable travel culture.

Mr. Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, said “TAT has been a strong supporter since the campaign’s inception in 2018. Through our public relations efforts, we urge tourists to be a part of this awareness-raising initiative to help curtail demand for ivory products. Also, since 2020, we have been promoting the “Elephant Care Tourism” initiative to offer tourism that cares about Thai elephants”

WWF Thailand initiated the ‘Travel Ivory Free’ campaign after China banned its domestic ivory trade in December 2017.

A key element in this initiative is to publicise that it is illegal to buy ivory products and take them out of Thailand. Under Thailand’s Wild Animal Conservation and Protection Act, B.E. 2562 (2019), any tourists caught with ivory items could face a potential penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment or fines of up to one million Baht or both.

According to findings by GlobeScan, Thailand remains one of the biggest illegal ivory destinations for diehard buyers. The results revealed that although some groups of tourists plan to purchase ivory as souvenirs or gifts ahead of their visit, a larger number were encouraged by tour guides while in Thailand.

Ms. Pimpavadee Phaholyothin, WWF Thailand’s Chief Executive Officer, said together with key players in the travel and tourism industry, WWF Thailand will continue to actively raise awareness to urge tourists to put an end to the illegal ivory trade and help spread the awareness by using #TravelIvoryFree via social media.

Tourists can engage with the “Travel Ivory Free” campaign at key tourist locations, such as, international airports and department stores in Thailand and join together to raise awareness and partake in responsible and sustainable tourism experiences while in Thailand.

Thailand’s “Naga Fireballs” wins 1st runner-up in International Snow Sculpture Contest in Sapporo

This year, TAT sent the Thai team to present an ice figurine of Naga Fire phenomenon, one of the more mysterious of local festivals, to promote Thailand’s deep culture and artistic talent.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), has congratulated the Thai ice sculpting team for being named the 1st runner-up for their rendition of “Naga Fireballs” at the 48th International Snow Sculpture Contest, which concludes today.

The ice figurine of Naga Fire phenomenon showcases a portion of Thai mythology and deep culture as well as artistic talent that form part of the TAT’s ongoing promotion of Thai soft powers and meaningful travel experiences in Thailand.

The International Snow Sculpture Contest, part of the 74th Sapporo Snow Festival, has returned for the first time this year, after three years of hiatus due to the pandemic. The competition saw nine participating teams, from USA (Hawaii and Portland), Indonesia, Poland, Singapore, Lithuania, Mongolia, South Korea, and Thailand.

This year, TAT has sent a team of veteran Thai ice sculptors, Kusol Bunkobsongserm, Amnoaysak Srisuk, and Kritsana Wongtes, who have entered the competition multiple times.

The team leveraged Thai mythology, beliefs and deep culture in their rendition of “The Naga Fireballs,” a 3m wide, 3m high and 3m in depth snow sculpture. It is created under the concept that the ‘Naga Fire phenomenon’ is the natural event based on religious beliefs when hundreds of fireballs rise out of Mekong River into the sky before disappearing. Locals believe that Naga, a sacred serpent of water and abundant, shoots the fireballs as offerings to Buddha.

This year marks Thailand 24th participation in the competition since 1991. In the last 23 entries, teams from Thailand have won the competition nine times, including twice three-consecutive-year winning in 2008-2010 and again in 2018-2020. The other three winning years were 2000 (first win for Thailand), 2013 and 2015.

The 74th Sapporo Snow Festival will be held until 11 February 2024 at three venues – Odori (main site), Susukino and Tsudome.
