A new immersive gastronomic experience for the gourmet traveller has been curated by Kuroko Boutique Tours, a Perth-based travel agent specialised in Japan.

Co-hosted by one of Australia’s most celebrated chefs, Tony Howell, and founder of Kuroko Boutique Tours, Rika Nishimura, the seven-day tour that begins on 28 May 2024 is truly intimate, limited to just twelve guests.

Japan is one of the most popular destinations for Australians travelling overseas.

It is safe, clean and easy to reach with a one hour time difference, which means no jet lag.

Japan’s attraction includes the fascinating cultural differences and its delicious, healthy cuisine steeped in tradition.

Mr Howell said he is looking forward to learning about both classical and contemporary Japanese foods from the source and sharing the experience with fellow food-lovers.

“We’ll be eating our way around Japan, going to places we’d never be able to find without someone like Rika, Japanese native who has been leading premium specialised tours to Japan for many years,” Mr Howell said.

“We’ll be experiencing a genuine side of Japan, away from the tourist traps, visiting farms and local restaurants that usually don’t cater for tourists.

“I’m most excited about visiting family-run food businesses that have been passed down through the generations and learning how historic Japanese foods such as Somen noodles are made, the same way as they’ve been made for hundreds of years, tasting renowned Sake in the brewery and visiting one of the best handmade soy sauce producers in the world.

“We’ll be participating in cooking classes learning how to make traditional dishes and I’ll be cooking alongside Japanese guest chefs with fresh local produce that we pick up at the markets that morning,” the chef said.

From the ancient capital Kyoto to the coastal fishing town of Kochi, the culinary itinerary focuses on the rich tapestry of historical, cultural, and regional Japan, revealling the key ingredients of Japanese cuisine.

Ms Nishimura said that the tour is suited to solo travellers as well as couples of any age who are food enthusiasts with a curious mind.

“It will be a gastronomically stimulating tour but there’s also time to recharge and indulge yourself just like Japanese locals by soaking in Onsen, a traditional hot spring bath,” she said.

“Japan is one of the oldest civilisations with a diverse history where old and new co-exist beautifully with many time-honored customs, ancient gods, and cultural landmarks sitting alongside cutting-edge technologies and trendy pop culture – it’s completely unique.

“You will be immersed in authentic tastes and discover the diverse and balanced, healthy, Japanese diet and find out why it is so highly regarded.

“With no jet lag and with every detail taken care of, you can fully relax and engage all the senses from the moment you land. All you need to bring is your passpart, a suitcase and a good appetite!

“Travelling in May means comfortable temperatures and great weather, young lush greenery everywhere, and a special ingredient is in season. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the sensationally delicious regional dish Katsuo no Tataki at its best, a highlight of the tour,” Ms Nishimura said.

Japan was one of the last countries to open its borders after the pandemic.

It is also home to one of five Blue Zones in the world, where people live the longest due in part to their healthy diet.

“It seems that everyone I’m talking to at the moment has just been to Japan or is planning to go to Japan, it’s one of the hottest destinations in the world, I can’t wait to share the experience with a few food-loving guests,” Mr Howell said.

This year’s season has been busiest year yet for Kuroko Boutique Tours with every tour to Japan sold out.

Signs point to next year being the same with all 2024 tours already sold out, motivating the addition of a new culinary focussed tour.

Booking is open for the small group Japan Culinary Tour with Tony Howell and it is expected to be fully subscribed soon. Book here.
