Are you ready to slow down and appreciate an often overlooked part of nature?

Poetry and literature throughout Japanese history has romanticized moss, using it to represent the deep passage of time.

Just visit any traditional Japanese landscape garden and you will often see rocks coated with dark green velvety moss dotted delicately throughout the serene surroundings.

The current rainy season is the perfect time to take some time out to appreciate this quintessentially Japanese plant, with plenty of stunning gardens throughout the country showcasing their mossy delights.

Hiyo Koke no Sato in Ishikawa Prefecture has a specially dedicated moss garden, and Chatsubomi Moss Park in Gunma Prefecture boasts a rare moss type called ‘chatsubomi’.

For something a little closer to Tokyo, why not visit the moss garden at the Hakone Museum of Art in Kanagawa Prefecture, created by museum founder Okada Mokichi in 1952?
