Tokyo News: Countdown to 2023

Dear Friends of Tokyo,

The New Year's countdown is on!

January means celebrations and family time in Japan. New Year’s is a very special and peaceful time resembling Christmas time elsewhere. Enjoy visiting Tokyo’s famous shrines and mochi making. Make sure to bundle up as you might encounter snow.

During your temple or shrine visits in Japan you will probably recognise the wooden praying plaques called ema. These are traditionally used to write prayers or wishes on, but people also have gotten more creative in recent years by drawing pictures or decorating them to make them stand out more. Find some of the most unique Ema across Tokyo here.

From Tokyo to you, we wish you a wonderful festive season and look forward to seeing you again in 2023!
