The full program for Parrtjima – a Festival in Light 2021 has been announced

Hosted 9-18 April in Alice Springs, this year’s event will see an exciting new show for the MacDonnell Ranges, seven new large-scale light installations, and an incredible array of performances, workshops, talks and films woven into the program’s 2021 theme ‘Future Kultcha’.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

Signature Installations:

  • Landing Kultcha: Welcoming guests to Alice Springs Desert Park, Landing Kultcha spans an incredible 20 metres and unifies male and female cultural traditions, represented by carved spears and digging sticks.
  • Revolving Kultcha: Celebrating the similarities between the traditional coolamon and shield with the contemporary skateboard, this installation Revolving Kultcha features the shared forms of shields, coolamons and skateboards.
  • Merging Kultcha: Symbolising the inter-connected history between local Arrernte people and Cameleers, Merging Kultcha features a train of five illuminated camels, each over three metres high.
  • Harvesting Kultcha: Linking traditional knowledge of how women gather the honey ant, Harvesting Kultcha is an interactive display inspired by the constant movement of the honey ant nest.
  • Grounded Kultcha: This crowd favourite makes a return, with a mesmerising animated sequence of curated artworks projected on to the sands of Alice Springs Desert park.
  • Spirit Kultcha: Two kilometres of the MacDonnell Ranges come alive through a spectacular light and sound show and for the first time in Parrtjima’s history, the soundtrack for the Ranges is a collaboration with renowned Aboriginal electronic music duo Electric Fields.
