MTCO and DASTA to share best practices of tourism recovery in Thailand and Mekong Region

On February 25, our Executive Director Jens Thraenhart was invited to join as a keynote speaker for the International College for Sustainability Studies webinar to present and share some of Mekong Tourism’s initiatives aligned to tourism recovery in the Greater Mekong Subregion with over 100 students under the Sustainable Tourist Destination Development course.

The event mainly highlighted how COVID-19 has impacted negatively to tourism industry economically and socially. The panel discussion was also joined by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) to share the experience working with Thai public and private sectors and the view from regional collaboration in driving the tourism industry and policy towards the sustainable pathway.

The talk also focused on opportunities for destinations, especially Thailand and neighboring countries in the Mekong Region, to build resilience and prepare for tourism recovery in the future towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our Executive Director’s key points were essentially around collaboration among tourism stakeholders, especially during these challenging times. Shifting the way of thinking was also encouraged to create value for the industry, prepare for tourism recovery, and create a sustainable model for destination management.

Finally, MTCO would like to thank @IC for a great effort in organizing this webinar and appreciating the partnership in recent years and DASTA to share some of the best practices in term of sustainable tourism and some of the key strategies for tourism recovery in Thailand. We hope that this event will benefit the younger generation in the region as a capacity building program for their future career.
