Myanmar Media Briefing at ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2020

Myanmar‘s Ministry of Hotels and Tourism reported on the visitor arrivals to Myanmar for the 9 months ended Sep-2019. Details include:

  • Visitor arrivals to Myanmar totalled: 1.3 million, which was a 41% increase on the same period in the previous year.

The increase can be attributed to more visitors coming from Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea and China, which have been the targets of the government’s “Look-East policy” for tourism.

Tourists from China, Japan and South Korea have increased significantly since the government relaxed visa requirements for travellers from those countries in October last year.

Currently, visas on arrival are available for more than 50 countries at Myanmar’s international airports in Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw. The visas allow stays in Myanmar of up to 28 days. On October 1, the government also extended visas on arrival to visitors from Germany, Russia, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Australia, as part of efforts to attract more travellers from western countries.

  • Visitor arrivals by air Jan-Aug total 1.1 million, an increase of 34%.
  • The countries from which most people visited Myanmar from Jan - Aug 2019 are:
1) China: 457,069, +161%;
2) Thailand: 176,150, -9%;
3) Japan: 81,273, +24%;
4) South Korea: 75,489, +77%;
5) US: 42,282, +3%;
6) Singapore: 35,288, -3%;
7) Vietnam: 34,311, -3%;
8) India: 29,558, +3%;

11) Taiwan: 25,198, +8%;
12) UK: 21,787, -10%;
