JR East Japan Commences Promotional Campaign in Australia

In June 2019, JR East Japan Railway Company (JR East) launched their promotional campaign to the Australian market, including establishing a Facebook page and other activities. JR East is the largest travel railway company in Japan, encompassing approximately half the area of the mainland island of Honshu, from Tokyo to Tohoku, as well as servicing the major gateways to Japan, Narita and Haneda Airport.

In 2018, the number of Australian visitors to Japan reached around 550,000 per year. JR East provides access to not only the well-known tourist spots such as Tokyo and Nagano (Hakuba) and sightseeing spots near Tokyo such as Nikko, Izu and Karuizawa but also covers Tohoku region which is as yet unexplored by many Australian visitors.

Some of these unexplored areas include the Oirase Gorge in Aomori which reflects the lush green canopy of overhanging trees in the Tohoku area and has received 2 stars from the Michelin Green Guide. The 14km stream is surrounded by the ever-changing flow of water and unique rock formations all add to the natural beauty which can be enjoyed in all seasons.

The Omagari no Hanabi traditional fireworks festival in Akita prefecture has been going for more than a century and is renowned as being one of the three biggest fireworks festivals in Japan. The festival is said to be the most prestigious fireworks competition, both historically and traditionally, where 30 selected pyrotechnicians from across Japan compete against one another to decide whose fireworks are the best. The summer night sky is filled with over 18,000 fireworks and attracts visitors from all over Japan as well as overseas.

JR East offers the JR EAST PASS for international visitors to Japan which allows sightseers to travel around freely for 5 days on the JR East Japan network. JR East also provides useful information on special pass conditions as well as information on many of the region's must-see tourist spots.
