The Capsule Hotel Sydney - out of this world!

The Capsule Hotel lobby
I am experiencing a new concept for overnight accommodation in the heart of central Sydney. It is not your normal hotel, motel, or backpackers. It is a hotel where you sleep in your own private capsule!

It is located in bustling George Street Sydney, with the entrance just around the corner in Liverpool Street. The reception is on the 3rd floor, accessed by a lift or stairs. It is a very new feature of Sydney, as it opened in May this year.

My Capsule Hotel room
There are 3 floors of guest rooms on levels 3, 4 and 5 accessed by lift or stairs. Each room houses a small number of sleeping capsules. The windows have been retained in these former hotel bedrooms so natural light streams in during the day.

The capsules are rather futuristic looking, made from moulded plastic with sliding locking doors for privacy. They would be very at home on the set of a Star Wars movie!

Mine is a floor level side entry one, though others can be front entry and second level ones accessed by climbing steps. Most are for single occupancy, though there are some double occupancy ones available.

My capsule at The Capsule Hotel
My capsule on the 5th level is surprisingly roomy. It is not tall enough to stand up in, but it is tall enough to sit up in and stretch. It is long enough to sleep without feet or head touching the walls and not being curled up.

Inside the capsule are all the comforts of home. A smart TV with movies, TV channels and internet is on the wall at one end of the capsule. On the side of the capsule is a mirror, air conditioning controls, overhead and reading light controls, USB sockets, clock, headphone sockets, entry door lock and lockable safe. The bedding is a comfy mattress, pillow and doona.  Each capsule is provided with a large nearby locker, which is opened with the same key card as the capsule.

There is a policy of quietness in the capsule rooms after 10pm which is good to see. My room and capsule were very quite, with no noise heard from the other guests or from the streets outside. A good nights sleep was enjoyed on both nights.

The Capsule Hotel lounge area
A kitchen is located near the reception on the 3rd level, with microwave for cooking and cupboards, fridges and freezer for storing food and drink supplies. Tea and coffee are provided, but remember to supply your own milk. A small lounge and dining area near the kitchen has chairs and tables for eating and relaxing. Unisex toilets and showers are on each level.

The first 2 levels of the building house the Century Bar, with a cocktail bar and nightclub. These are ideal places for socialising with other Capsule Hotel guests and bar patrons.

The overnight price of the capsules are a bit dearer than bunks in backpacker hostels, but way cheaper than hotels in central Sydney. I saw a range of ages and nationalities enjoying their stay at The Capsule Hotel. It is a very clean, and the staff are very friendly and were able to help me with each request I made of them.

The Capsule Hotel is ideal for business or leisure visitors looking for reasonably priced overnight accommodation in central Sydney.
