Chengdu was the second Chinese city to host the event, which previously came to Beijing in 2003.
The 21st session, at which Chengdu was chosen by voting as the venue for 2017, was held in Medellin, Colombia.
At the 22nd session, the organization elected a new secretary general, discussed the latest global developments in the tourist sector, and announced a new blueprint for the tourism industry.
The Chinese National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and UNWTO co-hosted a roundtable focusing on China’s “Belt and Road” initiative, and advocated to establish an alliance of cooperation in tourism among the countries and regions along the Belt and Road.
The theme of the assembly was “Tourism and Sustainable Development Goals – Journey to 2030”, and took place at the InterContinental Century City Convention Center in Chengdu from the 11th through the 16th of September, 2017
