Tanabata Festival is one of the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center's largest annual cultural events and reflects the enduring friendship between Cambodia and Japan.
Organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia and the Japan Foundation, Phnom Penh Liaison Office, the festival promotes cultural understanding through interactive experiences that encourage visitors to discover the traditions, arts and customs of both nations.

Experience the Ancient Tradition of Tanabata
At the heart of the festival is Japan's beloved Tanabata tradition, also known as the Star Festival.
Inspired by the legendary story of two lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are separated by the Milky Way and reunited only once each year, Tanabata celebrates hope, dreams and the power of wishes.
Visitors are invited to write their personal wishes on colourful paper strips and hang them from bamboo branches, following a tradition that has been observed in Japan for more than a thousand years.
