| Koala Language Tour |
Visitors to the Blue Mountains now have a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in nature like never before. A new series of guided experiences, Koala Language Tours, invites travellers to learn the basics of koala communication, from grunts and snores to soft “greeting coughs.”
The initiative, led by wildlife ecologist Dr. Fiona Marks, aims to connect people with Australia’s iconic marsupials in a more interactive and playful way. Guests are encouraged to participate in daily sessions where they can practice koala sounds, observe behaviours, and explore the bush with trained guides.
Your First Koala Conversation
Tour participants receive a “Koala Phrase Guide,” designed to help decode and replicate some of the most common koala sounds. According to the guide, a typical morning greeting might include:
- “Mmmhrrr” – Hello, friend.
- “Grrrnnk” – I see you, keep your distance.
- “Huh-uhhh” – Snack time alert.
- “Chhrrp” – Let’s climb together.
Dr. Marks explains, “Koalas communicate primarily through vocalisations that can signal territory, mood, or interest. Our tours are a fun, educational way to experience their world firsthand.”
An Immersive Nature Experience
The tours take place in select Blue Mountains locations known for resident koala populations. Visitors can expect up-close encounters (from a safe distance), interactive sound exercises, and the opportunity to participate in group “koala conversations.”
One early participant said, “It felt almost like we were in a secret koala society. I swear my new ‘Mmmhrrr’ sounded just like the locals!”
Perfect for Families and Wildlife Enthusiasts
Designed to appeal to all ages, the experience combines adventure, education, and a touch of humour. Participants leave not only with new knowledge about koala behaviour but also with a memorable—and slightly silly—experience to share.
The Twist
While the Koala Language Tours sound completely believable, keen visitors may notice a subtle clue: koalas are notoriously quiet animals, and most of the sounds in our “phrase guide” are inspired more by imagination than actual research. April Fools! But who’s to say a little creative koala conversation can’t brighten your next trip to the Blue Mountains?
