Sydney’s Grand Old Lady Turns 124: A Stroll Through the Queen Victoria Building

Queen Victoria Building (QVB)
A Timeless Jewel in the Heart of the City

In the bustling centre of Sydney’s CBD, where modern skyscrapers tower above heritage-listed structures, the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) stands as a proud symbol of architectural grandeur and timeless charm. Located on George Street, stretching between Market and Druitt Streets, the QVB celebrated its 124th birthday on 21 July 2025—a remarkable milestone for one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

A Legacy of Resilience and Restoration

The Queen Victoria Building was designed by Scottish architect George McRae and opened in 1898, during a severe economic depression. It was built as a gesture of hope, with the intention of providing employment and reviving the city’s spirits. Over the decades, the building has faced near-demolition, wartime wear, and architectural neglect. But in the 1980s, a major restoration project breathed new life into the building, preserving its Romanesque Revival architecture and restoring it to its former splendour. Today, the QVB is a perfect blend of historical detail and contemporary elegance.

Not Just a Building – A Living Museum

Stepping inside the QVB is like entering a different era. Soaring stained-glass windows, wrought iron balustrades, mosaic-tiled floors, and an impressive central dome all speak to the craftsmanship of the late 19th century. Its upper floors offer sweeping views of the grand central void, framed by arches and domes. The building’s centrepiece is the Great Australian Clock, a moving mechanical marvel that tells stories from Indigenous and colonial history. There's also the Royal Clock, which marks each hour with animated scenes from the life of Queen Elizabeth I.

From Boutique Luxury to Everyday Indulgence

The QVB is far more than just a historical monument. With over 180 boutiques and cafes, it has become a destination for fashion enthusiasts, lovers of fine jewellery, art collectors, and those simply seeking a quiet corner for coffee. From high-end designers to bespoke artisan shops, the building offers a retail experience that matches its grandeur.

A City Icon That Still Captures the Imagination

Now at 124 years young, the Queen Victoria Building continues to be a favourite meeting point and photo stop for Sydneysiders and visitors alike. Its sandstone façade, magnificent domes, and seasonal decorations draw in foot traffic all year round. Whether admired from the light rail outside or explored from within, the QVB remains a much-loved part of Sydney’s urban identity.
