Did You Know?

Colorado is home to one of the most extensive backcountry hut systems in North America, with more than 30 huts across 350 miles of U.S. Forest Service trails called the 10th Mountain Division Huts.

Mountain Trip offers a new hut-to-hut ski tour connecting Ouray and Silverton, featuring iconic mountain towns and exceptional huts like Opus Hut and Thelma Hut.

Campfire Ranch Wash Gulch in Crested Butte accommodates 15 guests with modern amenities, including running water, flushing toilets, and a wood-fired sauna.

Explore full-service huts like Red Mountain Alpine Lodge and Opus Hut, or unique yurt experiences such as Broome Hut on Berthoud Pass and Pass Creek Yurt near Pagosa Springs.

Mountain huts, rooted in centuries-old traditions, have been vital sanctuaries for skiers and mountaineers worldwide. Originating from simple shacks, these shelters evolved into diverse accommodations, ranging from basic cabins to modern lodgings. In Colorado, the hut movement gained momentum in the late 1940s, leading to the creation of ski-oriented huts like the Tagert Hut. Inspired by this legacy, the Alfred A. Braun Memorial Hut System and the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association expanded, offering extensive backcountry opportunities while honouring the 10th Mountain Division soldiers. Today, these huts serve as essential refuges, preserving history and enabling contemporary adventurers to explore Colorado's wilderness.
