The connectivity into Queensland from around the world continues to grow, with China Eastern becoming the first Chinese Airline to return direct to Queensland this week, a momentous occasion since it has been three years, eight months and 21 days since the last direct service touched down in our state. The return of the flight has been supported through the Queensland Government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund as well as by Brisbane Economic Development Agency, Destination Gold Coast and Tourism Tropical North Queensland.
The non-stop services are running three times per week, before moving to daily flights from 8 December 2023, reigniting Queensland's most valuable inbound tourism market.
Over the next three years, China Eastern services are predicted to deliver 181,014 inbound international seats, generating $314 million and supporting 1,270 Queensland jobs.
China Southern will also make it's return to Queensland from 17 November.
Domestic recovery also expands as Rex launched its inaugural service between Adelaide and Brisbane. Rex has also increased flights into Cairns as well as additional services across the busy festive season. This development coincides with TEQ's current campaign with Rex, offering competitive and high value fares for travellers from interstate and Queensland.
In addition to connectivity recovery, Brisbane Airport has announced its next transformation, with a $5+ billion Future BNE investment program, set to create a better airport experience and cater for Queensland’s expanding population.
The Future BNE invest program consists of 150 projects to transform the airport.
Mackay Airport is also receiving upcoming development with a major accommodation precinct being proposed, with key local stakeholders saying the development will help to relieve the critical strain on workforce accommodation options, which impacts employers, operations and overall economic viability.
Cairns Airport is set to close out the year with a swathe of significant developments, including major infrastructure improvements, compelling international passenger numbers and the appointment of a familiar local figure as Chair of the Board of Directors.
