Behold the Nachi Fire Festival!

The stroll from Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine to Nachi Waterfall is typically a peaceful affair, best done leisurely in order to soak in the lush and peaceful surrounds.

But once a year on the 14th July, the stone staircase to the waterfall comes alive with festival participants bearing gigantic flaming torches weighing up to 60 kg!

The ritual is carried out to purify the route for the 12 deities of the shrine, who are carried down the waterfall in mikoshi (portable shrines).
Could you handle the heat?
