It's been an extremely challenging period for our friends in the travel and tourism industry, so it's been great to do our small part to help raise their spirits with the Out & About with Kids 2020 Readers' Choice Awards. You'll find all 42 winners in this issue. Huge congratulations to the worthy recipients!
While Australia dominates once again this issue, we continue to dream, so we've also thrown in some aspirational stories about Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Greek Islands, the latter of which regular contributor Flip Byrnes took the opportunity to visit without the crowds and cruise ships after finding herself stranded in Europe during the pandemic.
Our celebrity Q&A this issue is with The Project co-host Peter Helliar, who recently released the book Trippin' with Kids – How to Have Fun on Holidays Like You Used to Before You Had Kids with his wife Bridget.
Whitsundays Tourism CEO Natassia Wheeler also shares what she loves about the region in our Insider Interview. The magazine also features the latest family travel news, from new hotel openings and refurbishments to sustainability initiatives and organisations giving back, as well as reviews of Thredbo Alpine Hotel and Tiona Holiday Park in NSW, and Mantra Pandanas Darwin in the Northern Territory.
Publisher Elisa Elwin said she was delighted to be able to continue to provide families with ideas and inspiration during such a challenging year. She was also thrilled that five stories published in the magazine have been recognised in the Australian Society of Travel Writers' 2020 Awards for Excellence. Editor Angela Saurine's story from our autumn 2020 issue, Bouncing Back, about visiting destinations in Australia impacted by the summer bushfires, is a finalist in the Best Trade or Tourism News Story category. Flip's story Breaking the Wall, published in our spring 2019 issue, is a finalist in the best Family Travel Story category. It is a moving story about visiting the Berlin Wall in Germany with her young daughters and German-born husband, who is returning for the first time since he was a boy, before the Wall came down.
Three stories published in the winter 2020 issue are also finalists in the same category. They include another story by Flip, Embracing Life's Biggest Adventure. The story talks about how, after climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Blanc and descending Europe's highest peak Mt Elbrus on a snowboard, some people wondered how she would adjust to motherhood. But she has found many new adventures with her kids in tow. Two-time ASTW Travel Writer of the Year winner Catherine Marshall's story Sowing the Seeds, in which she reflects on how road trips across Australia and the US led her children on their own paths to adventure, is also a finalist in the category. Shaney Hudson was also recognised for her story Adventure and Simplicity on a Family Holiday in the Cook Islands, a destination she and her husband love so much they return time and again with their toddler. The last three stories were also published in Out & About with Kids' sister publication Travel Play Live, as part of the Inspirational Women Series supported by the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism & Ideas.
Out & About with Kids aims to inspire families to spend quality time together on holidays and create memories that will last a lifetime. The magazine is distributed to both consumers and travel agents with a temporarily reduced circulation during the pandemic of 8,000 printed copies, with 1.8 million digital magazines distributed via Stay at Home Mum and Bright Star Kids. We also have a growing social media following with 33,000 followers and 19,500 newsletter subscribers.
