Canary Islands closer to the ‘new normal’

The Canary Islands Archipelago embracing Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and La Palma have now joined La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa in second stage of phased and safe reopening.

The Canaries' beaches have opened for sunbathers as have shopping centres and cultural spaces, with some limitations. 

And as part of this second phase, restaurants and bars have been given more relaxed guidelines to follow. 

The Canaries' major airports, Tenerife Sur, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, have been reactivated for international flights and are expecting to open the 'safe corridors' in July. 

All aspects of travel are being recast in the Islands as Spain gears up for tourists. The Spanish government planning to lift the two-week COVID-19 quarantine requirement for overseas arrivals on 1 July 2020. 

The Canary Islands are undergoing extensive renovations through the Global Tourism Safety Lab to protect visitors from the coronavirus and ensure social distancing. 

Its priority is to ensure that its health and safety measures are applied to its tourists and its The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has selected the Canaries to test the world's first safe flight with passengers carrying coronavirus-free health passports.. 

Travellers of this flight, in July, will be monitored by a secure healthy app launched by the Canarian company hi + Card. 

The Canaries' COVID-19 cases rate is amongst the lowest in Europe. 

Only 0.1% of the total population has been affected and its mortality rate, 6.8 death per 100.000 compared to Denmark (9.2); Germany (9.3), Sweden (34) and theUnited Kingdom (49.9).
