The stage 3 of the Southern expressway that extends from Matara to Hambantota has been completed allowing vehicles to travel from the Bandaranaike International Airport up to Hambantota. The section between Matara and Bawarakumbuka was declared open to the public, connecting Hambantota and Matara.

The completed Southern Expressway connects some of the major areas such as Kadawatha, Kottawa, Kalutara, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Weligama, Mirissa, Matara, Tangalle, Yala and Hambantota through well-located interchanges.
