Wotif.com Reveals the 'Hottest' Holiday Destinations this Australia Day

Australians will be chasing the sun in their own backyard and abroad this Australia Day according to Wotif.com®

  • Queensland and New South Wales coastal destinations are most popular.
  • Melbourne is the number one city destination.
  • Many Aussies will be going overseas for the Australia Day 'long weekend*', with Bali and Phuket being the most popular international destinations.

As Aussies look forward to celebrating Australia Day with BBQs and beach cricket,Wotif.com has counted down the most popular coastal spots, city escapes and overseas destinations for getaways covering the 'Australia Day' period (22 – 26 January).

Wotif.com Travel Specialist Kim Stockham said thousands of Aussies have booked their Australia Day travel with Wotif with many of them stretching the trip to make a four day weekend, swapping work for a beach getaway, capital city escape and for some, even overseas Australia Day celebrations.

“The top Wotif destinations this year include iconic Australian beach destinations, as well as local coastal spots, attracting holidaymakers from all over Australia this Australia Day,” she said.

Wotif reveals the top Aussie coastal destinations for the Australia Day long weekend*:

  1. Surfers Paradise
  2. Noosa
  3. Broadbeach
  4. Caloundra
  5. Port Macquarie
  6. Port Stephens
  7. The Entrance
  8. Newcastle
  9. Cairns
  10. Warrnambool

Ms Stockham said beach deals on Wotif get snapped up quickly for Australia Day and this year is no exception, with accommodation demand revealing Surfers Paradise takes out the number one Australian coastal holiday destination.

“It's no surprise that Surfers Paradise topped the list with some of Gold Coast's most luxurious high rise hotels and apartment style accommodation conveniently located only meters from one of Australia's most iconic beaches,” Ms Stockham said.

“Surfer's Paradise's relaxed and less crowded neighbour, Broadbeach, also made it in the top three. Its apartment choices and resort options on Wotif makes it easy to bring the extended family or split the cost with a group of friends.”

Queensland's Sunshine Coast destinations, including Noosa, as well as Caloundra which came in after Broadbeach, rounded out the top four with both destinations offering great beaches for families and water sports for beach enthusiasts.

“From travellers looking for a foodie experience by the seaside to families seeking beaches with calm waves, Noosa delivers both with Hastings St well known for fine dining and the gentle waves at Noosa's Main Beach being great for the kids.”

“Sunny Queensland won't be the only state where Aussies will be getting in touch with their 'holiday self' with New South Wales' Port Macquarie, Port Stephens, The Entrance on the Central Coast and Newcastle predicted to draw large crowds, making the top eight, after Broadbeach and Caloundra.”

Warrnambool comes in as the number one coastal destination in Victoria, also making the top ten on the Wotif.com top Aussie coastal holiday list.

Melbourne is our number one capital city.

“Australians have a love affair with Melbourne so there is no surprise it's the number one city to visit for Australia Day this year,” Ms Stockham said.

“There's no better time to visit Melbourne than over Australia Day. The city's atmosphere is fantastic with the Australian Open tennis creating plenty of entertainment and fun both on and off the court.

“If you haven't made plans for Australia Day, there are still city deals available in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. If you're looking to chase the sun, we've got beach deals available at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Port Macquarie, but you'll need to get in fast.”

Australians chasing the sun abroad

Aussies are going further than the Australian coastline for Australia Day, according to hotel demand on Wotif.com and hot spots including Bali, Phuket, Auckland and Fiji are top of the global destination list.

“Plenty of Aussies have taken advantage of the Australia Day break and booked an overseas getaway to Bali or Phuket. Like them, I'll be celebrating all the great things about home from Bali this Australia Day,” Ms Stockham said.

“We're seeing more travellers bundling together their Bali flights and hotel in a Wotif package to get a savings not offered when booking hotel and flights separately which is a great way to save over peak periods like Australia Day and the Easter holidays.”

To kick off Australia Day celebrations, the Wotif Global Holiday Sale launches on 26 January, offering savings for hotels around the world.
