Laos Emerges as One of the World’s Fastest-Growing Tourism Destinations

Pi Mai Lao
A Record-Breaking Year for Lao Tourism

Laos has solidified its position as one of the globe’s fastest-growing tourism hotspots in 2024, securing the 13th spot worldwide. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Southeast Asian nation saw a remarkable 25.3 percent increase in international arrivals compared with the previous year.

In 2024, Laos welcomed over 4.1 million visitors, nearly one million more than in 2023. The majority of travellers came from neighbouring countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, and China, reflecting Laos’ growing appeal as an accessible and culturally rich destination for regional tourists.

Southeast Asia Shines in Global Tourism Growth

Within the Southeast Asia region, Laos’ strong performance was part of a broader growth trend. Vietnam recorded the highest surge, ranking fourth globally with a 38.6 percent increase in arrivals. Thailand followed closely, ranking 12th worldwide with a 26.3 percent rise, while Malaysia, Cambodia, and Singapore also posted significant gains of 24.2, 22.87, and 21.22 percent, respectively.

These figures underline the region’s increasing popularity among international travellers, with Laos emerging as a particularly compelling choice for cultural, adventure, and eco-tourism experiences.

Tourism Momentum and Future Targets

As of July 2024, Laos had already welcomed more than 2.3 million visitors, up from 2.1 million during the same period the previous year. This growth trajectory positions the country to surpass its 2025 target of 4.3 million tourists, highlighting both strong marketing efforts and the country’s natural and cultural attractions.

Globally, South Korea led the UNWTO growth rankings with a 48.82 percent increase, followed by Japan with 47.09 percent and Chile with 40.42 percent. Despite these shifts, France remained the world’s most visited country, attracting over 102 million arrivals in 2024.

Why Laos is Captivating Travellers

Laos has become increasingly attractive to international visitors for its unique combination of serene landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and immersive travel experiences. From the UNESCO-listed temples in Luang Prabang to the Mekong River’s tranquil cruises and vibrant local markets, the country offers a diverse range of tourism experiences that cater to both leisure and adventure travellers.

The surge in arrivals also reflects Laos’ improved infrastructure, including international flight connections, accommodation options, and tourism services that enhance visitor convenience and satisfaction.

This renewed vision supports the evolving priorities of the modern traveller — one who seeks cultural immersion, personal transformation, and responsible exploration. With powerful new partnerships and a fresh event framework, ITB Asia is setting the pace for innovation in tourism across the Asia Pacific and beyond.

The Experience Pavilion: A Major Milestone for 2026

One of the most anticipated developments is the launch of the Experience Pavilion, co-developed with Tripadvisor and debuting at ITB Asia 2026. Announced on the opening day of ITB Asia 2025 in Singapore, the partnership was solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Messe Berlin Asia Pacific and Tripadvisor Singapore Pte Ltd.

The Pavilion will showcase immersive travel offerings across adventure, culture, wellness, food, and more. Tripadvisor, whose platforms recorded over 11 million experience bookings in the first half of 2025 (a 15% year-on-year increase), will co-curate the Pavilion’s theme and content. Messe Berlin will deliver premium placement, targeted buyer access, and heightened media exposure to ensure maximum impact for exhibitors.

Bringing Innovation to the Exhibition Floor

With this new focus, ITB Asia 2026 will feature dedicated zones tailored to emerging travel trends. These curated verticals are designed to help industry players better understand evolving traveller desires and gain actionable insights to fuel growth.

Expect to see a broader destination mix, with a spotlight on distinctive, story-driven travel experiences that resonate with Asia Pacific’s outbound markets. From wellness retreats in the Himalayas to cultural adventures in Latin America, the Pavilion will inspire both product development and partnership building.

Strategic Partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board

MOU Signing with the Singapore Tourism Board at ITB Asia 2025
Also unveiled at ITB Asia 2025 was a renewed Memorandum of Understanding with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). Running from 2026 to 2028, the collaboration is set to elevate the event through co-marketing efforts, enriched content tracks, enhanced buyer engagement, and deeper government involvement.

Poh Chi Chuan, Executive Director, Exhibitions and Conferences at STB, shared: “This strategic partnership with Messe Berlin reinforces Singapore's position as the World's Best MICE City and aligns with our Tourism 2040 goals. ITB Asia is a high-value business event that drives innovation, knowledge exchange, and economic impact. We are honoured to continue hosting this event and to shape the future of tourism together.”

A Platform for Industry Breakthroughs

To champion new ideas and creativity, ITB Asia will also introduce a “New Offering” badge from 2026 onwards. This designation will highlight exhibitors launching new products, services, or destinations, helping media, buyers, and partners discover the freshest innovations in global tourism.

According to Scott Wegener, Director of Sales (APAC), Tripadvisor:
“Travellers today are seeking culturally rich and emotionally meaningful journeys. The Experience Pavilion allows the industry to respond directly to this shift and elevate the value of experiences in the travel lifecycle.”

Think You Know Cairns? Rethink Business Events in the Tropics

morning yoga on Four Mile Beach
Beyond the Postcard Image

Most people know the postcard-perfect Cairns – palm-fringed beaches, the Great Barrier Reef, and the world’s oldest surviving tropical rainforest. Add to that the rich cultural heritage of the Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal peoples, and you have one of the most remarkable destinations on Earth. But for business events, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef is so much more.

This region has evolved into one of Australia’s most dynamic hubs for conferences, exhibitions, and incentives. From hosting international congresses for 2,000 delegates to designing bespoke luxury incentive programs, Cairns offers world-class facilities, innovative venues, and a deep commitment to sustainability and wellbeing. The result is a destination that’s redefining what it means to connect, collaborate, and create in the tropics.

Professional Services and Local Expertise

Behind every great event lies exceptional expertise, and Cairns has built a professional ecosystem that rivals any capital city. From end-to-end registration management with real-time data and analytics, to cutting-edge staging, AV production, and interactive engagement tools like live polling and moderated Q&A – the region ensures seamless delivery and delegate engagement.

Registration support by Wallfly
Local video production teams are skilled at capturing highlights and social-ready content in real time, amplifying the event’s reach and creating a powerful sense of connection and excitement. Exhibition builders use sustainable materials, reusable structures, and low-carbon design, supported by local contractors who bring insider knowledge and cost efficiency.

This local-first approach supports a circular economy – minimising freight, reducing costs, and maximising impact. And when plans change, local insights ensure solutions are swift and smart, keeping every event on track.

Sustainability Is Not Just a Buzzword

In Cairns, sustainability isn’t a marketing tagline — it’s a way of life. With two World Heritage-listed icons to protect — the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest — environmental stewardship is built into everything the destination does.

NQ Exhibitions at Cairns Convention Centre
The region’s “repurpose for purpose” mindset transforms historical structures like naval oil tanks, sugar sheds, and timber mills into distinctive event spaces. The Cairns Convention Centre was an early pioneer of sustainable design and continues to lead with energy efficiency, water-saving systems, and responsible procurement.

Across the region, hotels and venues embrace eco-innovation through zero-waste initiatives, rooftop beehives, and carbon offset programs that actively restore reef and rainforest habitats. Delegates can refill water bottles at stations across the city, dine on low food-mile menus featuring fresh tropical produce, and travel using electric vehicles integrated into the city’s infrastructure.

Cairns also redefines sustainability engagement. Delegates can participate in local reforestation projects that support habitats for the Lumholtz tree kangaroo or cassowary, or partner with carbon offset programs like Reforest to create legacy rainforest corridors monitored for years to come. This is sustainability that educates, inspires, and delivers measurable impact.

Wellness Woven Into Every Experience

In Cairns, wellness isn’t an afterthought — it’s embedded in the environment. Simply walking from a waterfront hotel to the Cairns Convention Centre along a boardwalk framed by the Coral Sea can reset the mind and reduce stress before the day begins.

exploring the Great Barrier Reef
Wellness programs can be seamlessly integrated into business itineraries — from mindfulness sessions and chair yoga between meetings, to Indigenous-guided rainforest walks and rejuvenating swims in crystal-clear reef waters. For teams seeking deeper connection, options include white-water rafting adventures, sunset meditation sessions, and stargazing experiences under the vast tropical sky.

This natural balance between productivity and wellbeing transforms ordinary business events into holistic journeys that inspire creativity and foster meaningful human connection.

Connect Great, Leave Greater

Cairns & Great Barrier Reef is far more than a tropical backdrop. It’s a place where world-class professionalism meets natural wonder, where sustainability and wellness drive innovation, and where every business event leaves a legacy beyond its program.

Here, delegates connect deeply — with the destination, with its people, and with a shared vision of a more sustainable, inspired future.

Discover how Cairns & Great Barrier Reef is redefining business events. Connect with the team at AIME 2026 and explore how your next event can thrive in the tropics.

Cambodia and Yunnan Strengthen Tourism Ties Through New Agreements

A New Chapter in Regional Tourism Cooperation

Cambodia and China’s Yunnan Province have taken a major step toward deepening bilateral tourism collaboration with the signing of five significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). The agreements were concluded during an official working visit by Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, Huot Hak, to Kunming City, marking a new milestone in cross-border cultural and economic cooperation between the two regions.

The signing ceremony, co-chaired by Minister Huot Hak, Ma Zhigang, Head of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and Liu Minglin, CEO of Yunnan Investment Group, highlighted both parties’ shared vision to strengthen connectivity, expand tourism offerings, and promote sustainable growth across Southeast Asia.

Five MoUs to Boost Tourism Development and Connectivity

The newly signed MoUs cover a broad scope of collaboration designed to benefit both Cambodia and Yunnan’s travel industries. These include:
  • A cooperation agreement between the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Tourism and the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism.
  • A partnership between the Cambodia Tourism Marketing and Promotion Board and Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd.
  • A training collaboration between the Cambodia Tourism Vocational School and the Yunnan College of Tourism.
  • An MoU between the Cambodia Tourism Association and the Yunnan Provincial Tourism Association.
  • An agreement between the Cambodia Tourism Association and Yunnan Qicheng International Travel Services Co., Ltd.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, these agreements were the result of strategic discussions held during Minister Hak’s visit and represent tangible steps toward expanding tourism cooperation, enhancing professional skills in the sector, and developing innovative travel products that highlight the cultural and natural appeal of both destinations.

Fostering Greater Connectivity and People-to-People Exchange

The partnership between Cambodia and Yunnan aims to strengthen tourism marketing, increase flight connectivity, and encourage greater visitor flow between the two regions. Officials emphasized that the agreements will help attract more Chinese tourists to Cambodia’s key destinations such as Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, while also encouraging Cambodian travellers to explore Yunnan’s scenic landscapes and heritage-rich cities.

Minister Hak stated that the MoUs demonstrated the shared determination of Cambodia and Yunnan to deepen tourism ties, enhance cultural understanding, and open up new avenues for economic and social collaboration. He expressed optimism that these partnerships would serve as a model for regional cooperation within the Greater Mekong Subregion.

Building a Sustainable Future for Regional Tourism

Through the MoUs, both sides committed to promoting sustainable tourism practices and supporting private sector engagement in developing new tourism products and services. The focus on education and training underscored the importance of professional development to ensure high standards and service quality across the hospitality industry.

As the travel market continues to recover, the Cambodia–Yunnan partnership stands as a testament to the power of cooperation in building resilient tourism economies that benefit local communities and strengthen cultural connections across borders.

Discover Film in Washington State: Explore Hollywood’s Hidden Northwest Gem

Northern Exposure
Washington on Screen: Where Movie Magic Meets Natural Beauty

From Seattle’s shimmering skyline to the misty forests of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington State has long been a filmmaker’s paradise. Its diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and atmospheric small towns have brought to life some of Hollywood’s most beloved films and television shows. Whether you’re strolling through Pike Place Market from Sleepless in Seattle or visiting the haunting forests of Twilight in Forks, Washington’s cinematic charm invites you to step inside the scenes of your favorite stories.

For decades, directors have chosen Washington’s iconic scenery to capture emotion, adventure, and romance. The result is a state where every mountain, coastline, and downtown street tells a story worth discovering.

Follow in the Footsteps of Hollywood Legends

The beauty of Washington is that many of its most famous film locations are only a short drive apart, making it easy to weave cinematic stops into a classic Pacific Northwest itinerary. Start in Coupeville on Whidbey Island—the real-life stand-in for Owens County, Massachusetts, in Practical Magic. Then make your way to Seattle to visit landmarks immortalized on screen and continue your journey across the state to find hidden gems featured in cult classics and contemporary hits.

TV Series Filmed in Washington

Northern Exposure – Roslyn

Step back into the 1990s in the small town of Roslyn, which doubled as Cicely, Alaska, in the hit TV series Northern Exposure. Visit the historic Brick Saloon—Washington’s oldest continuously operating bar—and snap a photo outside the Roslyn Café, known for its iconic camel mural. The town’s coal-mining heritage is preserved at the Roslyn Historical Museum, while nearby Suncadia Resort offers hiking, golfing, and spa experiences amid the Cascade Mountains.

Twin Peaks – Snoqualmie Valley

Enter the surreal world of Twin Peaks in the misty Snoqualmie Valley. Fans of David Lynch’s cult classic can visit the majestic Snoqualmie Falls, instantly recognizable from the show’s opening credits. Stay at the luxurious Salish Lodge & Spa, which doubled as the Great Northern Hotel, or enjoy a slice of cherry pie at Twede’s Café, the real-life Double R Diner. Nearby, the Kiana Lodge and Roadhouse Restaurant offer additional filming sites steeped in mystery and nostalgia.

Z Nation – Spokane

Spokane and its surroundings transformed into a post-apocalyptic world for the zombie series Z Nation. Iconic landmarks like Riverfront Park and the Museum of Arts and Culture were featured throughout the series. The nearby Kaiser Aluminum Foundry and Fort Casey State Park also appeared in episodes, showcasing Washington’s rugged landscapes and industrial backdrops in equal measure.

Movies Filmed in Washington

Sleepless in Seattle – Seattle

Seattle
Few films have captured Seattle’s charm quite like Sleepless in Seattle. Begin at Pike Place Market, where the Athenian Seafood Restaurant and Bar displays photos from the movie. The famous houseboat where Tom Hanks’ character lived can still be seen from the water on a local cruise. Don’t miss a visit to the Space Needle for panoramic views or Chihuly Garden and Glass to see a breathtaking collection of glass art that reflects the city’s creative soul.

An Officer and a Gentleman – Port Townsend

Port Townsend’s Victorian seaport and the historic Fort Worden became the setting for An Officer and a Gentleman. Today, Fort Worden State Park invites visitors to explore military bunkers, coastal trails, and the picturesque Point Wilson Lighthouse. Stay overnight in film-inspired accommodations or enjoy the town’s art galleries and maritime history in its charming National Historic Landmark District.

10 Things I Hate About You – Tacoma

Tacoma’s castle-like Stadium High School was the backdrop for the beloved teen classic 10 Things I Hate About You. Perched above Commencement Bay, this architectural gem is still in use today. Nearby, explore filming spots like Gas Works Park and the Fremont Troll in Seattle. For fans seeking a behind-the-scenes experience, Pretty Gritty Tours offers guided walks that reveal the film’s local legacy.

Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home – San Juan Islands

Free Willy 2
The stunning San Juan Islands provided the backdrop for Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home. Scenes were filmed on Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Island—locations known for their pristine waters and thriving marine life. Today, visitors can embark on whale watching tours from Friday Harbor or visit Lime Kiln Point State Park, affectionately known as “Whale Watch Park,” for one of the best chances to see orcas from shore.

Experience Washington’s Cinematic Spirit

Exploring Washington through the lens of film offers a new way to connect with the state’s natural and cultural treasures. Each filming location tells its own story—of creativity, history, and beauty. From the quiet corners of Roslyn to the cinematic skylines of Seattle, Washington invites travelers to create their own on-screen adventures.
