During my recent trip to Auckland for MEETINGS 2025 in June, I had the unforgettable opportunity to explore one of the city’s most imaginative attractions—Wētā Workshop Unleashed. Located in the vibrant SkyCity precinct, this hands-on, immersive experience was a standout moment in the MEETINGS social program and offered a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the magic of movie making.

This isn’t your typical museum or gallery tour—it’s an interactive, creative journey into fantastical worlds where imagination, craftsmanship and storytelling collide.

Wētā Workshop Unleashed transports you into the art and process behind some of the world’s most beloved fantasy and science fiction productions. Although not based on one particular film, the experience draws on the iconic style and design techniques Wētā Workshop is globally known for—most famously through their work on The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Avatar.

As soon as you enter, you're immersed in a fictional film studio with three wildly creative genres: a sci-fi adventure, a fantasy epic, and a chilling horror. Each section reveals how concept artists, model makers, creature creators and practical effects specialists bring stories to life from sketchpad to screen.

Interactive exhibits let you try your hand at prop design, puppet movement and even digital effects. The guides—many of whom are working artists themselves—offer rich insight into the tools and techniques of the trade, making the experience as informative as it is entertaining.

You’re not just observing—you’re stepping into the role of the storyteller, the designer, the maker, surrounded by the tools, textures and techniques that shape the movie magic we see on screen.

As part of MEETINGS 2025, Wētā Workshop Unleashed offered a perfect contrast to the structured event sessions. It reminded me why creativity is such a powerful driver in both tourism and business. The experience was energising, thought-provoking, and just plain fun.

After the tour, MEETINGS 2025 delegates gathered for lunch in one of the event spaces at Wētā Workshop Unleashed—a perfect setting to reflect on the imaginative journey we had just taken. I was fortunate to be seated at a table with none other than Sir Richard Taylor, the co-founder of Wētā Workshop. His insights into the world of storytelling, design, and the future of creative industries made the luncheon even more memorable.

For those visiting Auckland for business, it’s the kind of outing that leaves a lasting impression—and for leisure travellers, it’s an easy walk from central hotels and a 
worthy addition to any itinerary.

Tours run regularly throughout the day, offering multiple opportunities to step into this creative universe. Advance booking is highly recommended, especially during weekends, holidays, and peak visitor periods. Allow around 90 minutes to fully enjoy the experience, though you may find yourself lingering longer, inspired by the extraordinary artistry, technical wizardry, and boundless imagination around every corner.
