Kirishima Onsen |
Located at an elevation of 600 – 850 meters (1,968 – 2,789 feet), Kirishima Onsen is also famous as a therapeutic hot spring town due to its spring water’s many healing benefits. Visitors can also enjoy relaxing drop-in hot springs and footbaths.
Kirishima-jingu Shrine, located near Kirishima Onsen, has an impressively long history. The grounds are covered with dense greenery and majestic vermilion-lacquered shrine pavilions. Every year on June 10th, the Kirishima-jingu Shrine Otaue Rice Planting Festival is held to pray for prosperity at the beginning of the rice harvest. At this rice planting ceremony, a grand prayer rite and dedication dance to the gods of the rice field takes place.
