Love is in the air! It's Penguins in Paradise as SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium welcomes new bachelorettes this breeding season

Kissing, cuddling and group hangouts is what you can expect to see the Little Penguins at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium to be up to as they welcome three new beautiful birds into the mix these school holidays.

P Diddy, Mushroom and Ki Ki have been welcomed with open flippers by their fellow Little Penguins, bringing the total to 15 Little Penguins residing at the aquarium, with nine bachelorettes and six bachelors.

For a penguin, there is nothing more important than being a parent and, much like the bachelors and bachelorettes of the human kind, the birds are given the opportunity to express all of their natural behaviours, including during breeding season which starts in July and continues through to December. This type of behaviour can include singing to each other and building the most beautiful nests out of any leaves and twigs they can get their littles flippers on.

“We are very excited to welcome these three new female birds into our colony. We are hoping that they might catch the eye of our bachelors who have been waiting for their arrival,” says Laetitia Hannan, Displays Department Supervisor.

Playing hard to get, the new birds haven't shown particular interest in any of the males – yet. Original male member Hadron, however, seems to have taken an interest in Ki Ki so only time will tell if she reciprocates this flirtatious behaviour.

The team at SEA LIFE Sydney can confirm that there are two couples in the aquarium so far this year, with females Raptor and Gherkin partnering with Vesty and Mr Black respectively. Little Penguins, unlike the Gentoos and Kings, aren't as monogamous and can partner with others in their lifetime, however this will be Gherkin and Mr Black second year in a row that they are together – now that's real love!

Little Penguins have been known by a number of different names, like Fairy Penguins here in Australia and Blue penguins in New Zealand. In an attempt to unify the name, the name was settled as Little Penguins as it's quite descriptive of the species! In terms of their natural habitat, penguins are found all over the Southern Hemisphere and many of them are found in temperate places like southern parts of Australia. Little Penguins prefer temperatures between 12 and 25 degrees but can live in areas like Sydney that get up to 35 degrees! Their display at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium was inspired by the boardwalks at Manly where the Little Penguins that reside there like to nest under.
