10 FREE THINGS TO DO ON NORFOLK ISLAND

Let's be honest, when you think of planning a holiday you think money, money, and money. Airfares, accommodation, hire car - just to get started. Then once you arrive at your destination you want to make the most of your time and see everything, and do everything……. again you think money, money, and money. WRONG! It's doesn't have to be like that, especially here on Norfolk Island. I'm going to let you in on a secret…. There's plenty to see and do for the *frugal traveller. (*Definition of a Frugal Traveller - Economical, provident and thrifty traveller)

We have compiled a list of the top 10 activities that won't empty your pockets. In fact you won't need to put your hands in your pockets at all! With the money you save on activities, you can spend on other luxuries, such as spoiling yourself at one of our beauty salons, splurging on a night out, or spending up big in our amazing shops.

1. Relax at Emily Bay
First thing you need to do when you hop off the plane and settle into your accommodation is make your way down to Emily Bay, situated in World Heritage Listed Kingston. Go for a swim, walk along the beach or just sit on the beautiful white sand and admire the scenery. Whatever you do, just breathe, unwind and let yourself relax, after all you are on vacation.

2. Visit the beautiful Botanical Gardens.
Covering over five hectares on National Park grounds, the beautiful Norfolk Island Botanical Gardens boasts a unique collection of endemic plants. The Botanic Garden also houses the Discovery Centre (FREE entry), where you can learn more about the incredible plants and animals, some of which are only found on Norfolk Island.

Norfolk Island National Park welcomes visitors to explore its stunning scenery and rich diversity of bird and plant life. Walking tracks wind through lush palm forests, stands of Norfolk Island pine and along the coastal fringe. You can even walk beneath the tallest tree ferns on earth.

The Botanical Garden, located at the top of Grassy Road, is a great place to explore and learn about Norfolk Island's plants and animals. . You can learn more about the island's unique bird life and plants in the Discovery Centre, also located in the gardens.

3. Explore the amazing convict ruins in World Heritage Listed Kingston.
The Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) is one of 11 historic sites that form the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2010. Entry into the site is free, take your time to explore the outstanding Georgian buildings and convict ruins. Please note, there is a small fee to enter the museums.

4. Wander through the Sunday Markets.
The Sunday Markets are bursting with local arts and crafts stalls. Try the local produce and enjoy locally brewed coffee while being entertained by a local artist. What better way to start your Sunday?

Catering for visitors and locals with supplies of seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables, cut flowers, home cooking, craft and souvenir items, books, jewellery, stamps, post cards and so much more! The Sunday Arts and Craft markets operate rain, hail or shine! Located in the Bicentennial Complex next to the Visitors Information Centre. Lots of stalls with local art and crafts, souvenirs, produce, cooking, local coffee, live entertainment and much more!

5. Watch the Ship Unload.
​ If you're lucky enough to be on Island when our cargo ship is unloading, this is a must see. Norfolk Island doesn't have a harbour, so the cargo is bought ashore by traditional long boats towed by motorised launches. The island has two piers, both situated at very picturesque locations. You could spend hours watching this long standing tradition while enjoying the scenery.

6. Walk to the highest point on Norfolk Island, Mount Bates.
The best way to access Mount Bates is to drive to Mount Pitt, the second highest point on the island. While you are there, take in the panoramic 360 degree view of the whole island. From this area it is just a short walk across the summit to Mount Bates. Marvel at the breathtaking views over the northwest of the island and then discover the structures at the top are relics of a World War II radar station. You will not be disappointed!

7. Go Geocaching.
​'Geocaching' is like a worldwide treasure hunt using a GPS or other mobile device to find secretly hidden containers call 'geocaches'. Each of the geocaches scattered all over the Island contain a logbook to let you record "I found it!" before you return it in exactly the same spot for the next geocacher to find. Drop in to the Visitor Information Centre for more information.

8. Get up close with the amazing array of fish and coral, snorkelling at Slaughter Bay.
Slaughter Bay is next to Emily Bay. Protected by the outer reef, this exotic location is a perfect way to explore our crystal clear tropical waters. Pack your snorkel and goggles because you won't want to miss getting up close to the abundance of astonishingly colourful fish, coral and other marine life.

9. Stroll through the Hundred Acres Reserve
​Morning, lunchtime or late afternoon… it doesn't matter what time of day you choose it will be a good time to stroll through the beautiful Hundred Acres Reserve. The walking track and boardwalk takes you through the forest and along the cliff top. Enjoy a picnic in the lovely grassy area at the top of the walking track or sneak across the road to The Homestead Restaurant between 10am and 12noon and enjoy a yummy homemade scone and local coffee. Let's face it, you deserve a bit of indulgence.

10. Experience a beautiful Norfolk sunset.
​Before you leave our beautiful Island you must experience one of our amazing sunsets, a highlight of any travellers trip. You will get a glimpse of our sunset anywhere on the Island, however we recommend heading to the west side of the Island for the best vantage point. Puppy's Point has comfortable picnic tables with uninterrupted views. Pack some of our local 'Hilli Goat Cheese', crackers, and your favourite bottle of wine, and sit back and enjoy the most amazing sunset you will experience in your lifetime.
