Update - Sri Lanka terror attacks

On Easter Morning Sri Lanka was shaken by a series of Bomb attacks in the Colombo capital area. This was an unprecedented incident in the region which has seen peace and a strong resurgence in tourism since the end of the civil war over a decade ago.

There were 3 churches and 4 hotels targeted. Officials raised the death toll to 290 with more than 500 people having been injured. A majority of the dead were worshipers at St. Sebastian’s Church; officials reported at least 104 dead there. The highly coordinated attacks left the island nation reeling, a crushing blow after almost a decade of peace since the end of the civil war.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks. By end of Sunday, the police said at least 13 people had been arrested in connection with the attacks in the capital, Colombo and the cities of Negombo and Batticaloa. Seven of them were seized at a hide-out after one suspect blew himself up, killing three officers.

The National Security Council headed by the President comprising Key Minsters are in discussion to determine the way forward. As a precautionary measure, the government had declared a 12 hour police curfew and a temporarily ban on all social media sites to avoid any further damage. The curfew has now been lifted.
