CINZ launches 2018 Mentorship Programme

Applications are now open for the Conventions and Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) 2018 Mentorship Programme.
 
The CINZ Mentorship Programme has established itself as success story for New Zealand’s growing business events industry, says CINZ Chief Executive Sue Sullivan. The programme is in its fifth year and open to all CINZ members from the many industries it represents.
 
“Our mentors are experienced business event professionals who are paired with mentees ready to expand their careers. Together they grow and learn, gaining individual guidance and advice throughout the year,” she says.
 
Tamsin Jenkins, Business Development Manager at Crowne Plaza Auckland, was a mentee in 2017. Her goal was to establish a learning relationship with someone outside her workplace to speak openly and honestly about her work experiences, and to take away valuable advice to help her career progression. She also wanted to expand her network of peers in the industry.
 
“I achieved both these objectives and more. In my mentor I had a great trusted advisor who provided me with outside confidence as I embarked on the next step in my career. His experience was so relevant to my new role and he was a great sounding board as I worked through the challenges of learning my new position,” Tamsin says.
 
“This was a fantastic opportunity to meet some other people at a similar point in their career in the industry who you might not otherwise come across. Building a network is so much easier with some familiar faces along the way.”
 
For mentor Leigh Lewis, National Director of Sales for Naumi Hotels, mentoring is a win-win for both mentor and mentee. “The programme works because it’s simple, easy to follow and rewarding. Mentors become a go-to for advice and someone to help them navigate their chosen industry.
 
“As a mentor I learnt about myself, my style, weaknesses and strengths - all in a safe and secure environment. Any time spent with a mentee is time saved in experience gained,” she says.
 
CINZ has again contracted the services of The New Zealand Coaching and Mentoring Centre (NZCMC) to support the seven-month programme with training and consultancy services.
 
Applications close on 22 February and mentor and mentee pairings will be finalised in March. The first training session is on 18 April in Auckland, facilitated by CINZ and NZCMC. From April through to October mentors and mentees are encouraged to meet fortnightly for their mentoring sessions. A group review session is being held on 10 July in Auckland. The 2018 programme finishes on 31 October, at the final day of the CINZ 2018 Conference in Auckland.
