Oshima Camellia Festival

This island-wide event is inspired by the camellia flowers are a famous product from Izu Oshima. The Camellia Plaza that is the main venue features sales of Oshima specialty local products, while visitors can enjoy folk entertainment and other events at the main stage.

Oshima Island Park is located next to the Camellia Plaza and contains a camellia garden where horticultural varieties of camellia bloom. There visitors can view kinkacha, an unusual type of camellia with yellow petals. Various other events will also be held throughout the island, including parades, camellia dyeing, beauty contests, camellia exhibitions, and more.

The symmetrical beauty and long-lasting quality of this flower has long been appreciated by young lovers as the token for expressing devotion to each other. Camellias also symbolize excellence – with red camellias meaning unpretending excellence.

Izu Oshima – a small volcanic island an hour’s boat ride away from Tokyo – is home to over 3 million camellia tress in over 120 varieties. During the Camellia Festival (held from the end of January to the beginning of April) visitors are treated to stunning views of literally millions of blooms, and can also experience traditional folk dances and singing.
