As part of Intrepid Travel's mission to get Nepal back on its feet following the devastating earthquake from April last year, the small group adventure travel company has partnered with the award winning documentary film Sherpa to continue to raise funds for Nepal.
Shot in Nepal by acclaimed high altitude filmmaker and climber Jennifer Peedom, the film documents the struggles of the Sherpa people in Nepal's often treacherous trekking industry. Peedom was present when the worst tragedy in the history of Everest occurred – a 14 million ton block of ice crashed down into the climbing route through the Khumbu icefall in April 2014, killing 16 Sherpas. The disaster provoked a drastic reappraisal about the role of the Sherpas in the Everest industry. The film tells the story of how, in the face of fierce opposition, the Sherpas united in grief and anger to reclaim the mountain they call Chomolungma.
Intrepid Travel will host a series of advanced screenings of Sherpa around Australia to raise funds for The Intrepid Foundation's Namaste Nepal Appeal, which was launched immediately after the earthquake. With over $410,000 raised so far, the appeal supports local and international NGOs in Nepal, including Plan International, World Wildlife Fund, Himalayan Rescue Foundation and Seven Women.
“Tourism is vitally important to Nepal's recovery – it is the largest employer in Nepal – and it has obviously taken quite a hit since last year's earthquake”, says Darrell Wade, Intrepid Travel Co-Founder. “While international fundraising efforts played an important part in helping rebuild the country, we now have to focus on encouraging tourists to return to Nepal for its long-term economic well-being. Nepal wants travellers back – its trails are safe and open, its mountains still beautiful and the people as welcoming as ever. The best way for Australians to help Nepal is to visit and we hope to spread this message through our partnership with Sherpa.”
The screenings will be taking place on 23 and 24 February in Australian capital cities.
