Business Events Director Rosie Douglas said the team had received leads worth $18.4 million and confirmed $4 million worth of corporate and associate meetings for the region since July 1, a 50 per cent from the same period last year.
“While we were confident that the profile of the G20 and ATE14 would result in an increase in business long term, we are really pleased to see these immediate results,” she said.
“Hosting these events has enabled Cairns to demonstrate its outstanding conference capabilities and very strong, professional and collaborative business events industry.
“Delegates enjoy our easy aviation access and welcoming inner-city convention precinct, while event organisers are looking for truly unique venues with a wow factor.
“Our point of difference is the region’s dual World Heritage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest which present endless opportunities for amazing gala dinners, challenging team building activities and an incentive to stay longer for a holiday.”
Ms Douglas said much of the business had come from within Australia, but there also was strong interest from New Zealand.
“Business Development Executive Briohny Mutimer picked up five leads for incentive groups worth $500,000 at the recent Pacific Area Incentives & Conferences Expo (PAICE) in New Zealand, which is the best result we have had at this event in a few years,” she said.
“The annual Sell TNQ event bringing Australian and New Zealand meeting and incentive buyers to Cairns last month was equally successful with a record number of participants staying for post-touring in Port Douglas and Palm Cove.
“Briohny joined representatives from the Cairns Convention Centre at the Professional Conference Organisers Association conference in Canberra last month which was an invaluable networking opportunity with the industry’s key decision makers.
“The G20 and ATE14 have really placed Cairns on the business events map and the team at Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier Reef are taking every opportunity to build on this success.
