Armidale the Hotspot for 2014

Located 475 kilometres north of Sydney in the NSW Northern Tablelands and home to the World Heritage-listed New England National Park, Armidale boasts a rich pastoral history.

The city has also just been voted in the top three of Australian Traveller magazine’s hottest travel destinations in 2014.

This country city is a buzzing urban centre with an impressive catalogue of galleries, museums, music gigs and theatre performances. There’s a bounty of cafés and restaurants, many of which focus on local ingredients, as well as picturesque national parks, majestic waterfalls and an abundance of plenty of walking trails.

With a year-round schedule of exciting festival and events, there’s always something happening in Armidale. The city shares its fascinating cultural heritage across an impressive range of galleries and museums. The New England Regional Art Museum for instance, is one of the most renowned regional galleries in Australia and has a collection to rival many, including the famous The Yellow Room Triptych artwork by Margaret Olley.

For lovers of food and wine, the New England wine region is home to more than 20 wineries, producing wines of a distinctive style, with its high altitude and cool winters.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said: “Armidale’s recognition within the top three hottest travel destinations in Australia for 2014, according to Australian Traveller, is a much-deserved coup for this vibrant city in country NSW. Armidale has much to offer travellers, from stunning nature experiences and expansive green spaces, to great cafes and restaurants focused on using fresh local produce, and an impressive arts and culture scene.”

“Armidale was part of Destination NSW’s recent $600,000 IT’S ON! in Regional NSW campaign promoting regional events and experiences to travellers from around Australia and in New Zealand. Visitor expenditure in regional NSW was worth more than $12.8 billion in 2012, and overnight visitation increased to 73 million visitor nights.”
