I had the pleasure of spending this weekend with some friends. Not just regular ones, but the kind of FRIENDS you spell with all capitals. They are the ones where you don't expect anything in return and you know that if you call and they can do it, you will always get a YES without hesitation...and so it was!
The weekend was originally planned with two families, which became five, and then three as the forecast of bad weather played a little role in who was in and who was out. The final count ended with four families.
We love to travel together so even if the weather is bad, we still go because the gist of it is that no matter what the weather, we’re like the family in the "BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING", always loud, always together, always eating, and drinking wine for the pure pleasure of the company!
We love every minute of it and the great part is that these families are my trusted partners, ready to try new experiences and new places and are perfect for providing me with truly valuable, honest, and useful feedback. This weekend we went to Menfi, a small coastal town with wonderful wineries southwest of Sicily, about an hour away from Palermo, where we live! We organized a wine tasting, a lunch with family, and a small village fortification stay. And all of this with kids, a lot of them!
We were eight adults and nine kids. Like I mentioned earlier these are the close friends you have where if you can’t go, you may send your kids with them or visa versa. And so it was on this trip, we picked up a few kids, without parents, at the last minute. We are just as comfortable taking their kids as they are leaving them with us, and we love the community spirit!
There is something special about the extended Italian family and the feeling of community that is affecting people in more permanent ways lately. Did you know that there are a lot of people from foreign countries who are moving to Italy because of our way of life? Inclusion, conviviality, and a spirit of adaptation are the norm here and people feel safe and happy.
