Up, Up and Away with Sri Lankan Airlines

It was with much anticipation I looked forward to my first visit to Sri Lanka. I was invited to go with a small group of Australians on a week-long familiarisation tour of "The Pearl of the Indian Ocean."

To get there I flew with the national carrier of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Airlines. The UL 605 flight departed promptly on time at 15.30 on the 9 October from Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne. I had plenty of spare space in my luggage, as there was a generous 30 kg checked-in bag allowance and a 7kg carry on allowance.

My Economy Class seat was comfortable and tilted back for a restful flight. Inflight entertainment was provided on the video screen on the back of the seat in front of me. I watched several movies from a good selection of new release and classic Hollywood and international movies and TV shows. Also on offer was music to listen to and online games to play. There was also the option of watching the flight path of the plane on a 3D map.

The two meals served on the plane were a feature of the flight and had a choice of dishes to choose from. The first meal had a choice of Chicken Curry Sri Lankan Style with mixed vegetable curry and cummin rice or Steamed Fish in caper tomato sauce with buttered mixed vegetables and boiled potato. I chose the first which was delicious. A Waldorf Salad, Banana Cake and Fresh Fruit accompanied the meal.

A Vegetarian Option of cauliflower and pea masala, black-eyed bean curry and coriander rice was also available for those preferring not to eat meat. Alcoholic drinks (spirits, wine or beer) and soft drink and fruit juices were offered. Freshly brewed Ceylon Tea and coffee were served after the meal.

The second meal had a choice of Spinach and Sauteed Chicken tossed with penne pasta in creamy ricotta sauce or Tortiglioni in cauliflower rosette sauce with semi-dried tomato. This choice was accompanied by fresh fruit and alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. Freshly brewed Ceylon tea and coffee were served after the meal.

The Sri Lankan Airlines flight crew was very attentive with their personal service offered during the flight. No request made to them was too much trouble.

The very smooth flight actually arrived 40 minutes prior to its estimated time of arrival of 22.30.
