Malaysia targets eight million Chinese tourists annually

Malaysia is vying to attract eight million tourists with RM22.1 billion spending power annually from China over the next five years, said Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

At present, 1.3 million Chinese tourists visit Malaysia annually. Therefore, Hamidi said the figure of eight million would seem huge but it was not impossible to attain with proper planning and effective promotion.

Speaking at the inauguration of Freeport A’Famosa Outlet that offers fashion, sport and accessories brands, Hamidi said, “The RM22.1 billion spending power may seem very big but it is not impossible to garner because each Chinese tourist spends on the average RM3,345 now on food, lodging and shopping,”

Ahmad Zahid said that though Malaysia recorded a large number of tourist arrivals last year, the government wanted to focus on attracting tourists from certain countries over the next five years.

Melaka Chief Minister Idris Haron, Deputy Tourism and Culture Minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin and A’Famosa Group managing director Alex Lau were also present at the event.
